  • Free imaginary horsepower

I took the airbox out of my 'bird and removed the intake muffler (it just snaps in and out). I put everything back together and took her for a ride. According to my seat-of -the-pants-o-meter I picked up 15 imaginary horsepower!
It sounds just like a CAI, SHHHWWWAAAARRRRRRK!
    Total cost-$0

That is great, I love it. I remember the same feeling 40 years ago

Who is to say your experiment only created imaginary horse power? I thought this thread would have a great deal of interest. However, it does not have many "takers". Is it because it might be too simple a solution to achieve more HP? or is it because we need a bit more information and a photo to make it clear.?

Mustang drivers claim a 10 to 15 hp gain by this trick. It has even been measured on dyno tests.

Removed the "intake muffler"? Hmmm . . .

I'm going to check into this over the weekend. I've never opened the airbox up to see what's in it, but any restriction would mean fewer horses up to the point where the engine is using all the air that it can burn in a naturally aspirated state (I'm using Harley logic here -- you can pick up 10+ horses on a Harley without buying anything at all, it's just making sure the intake and exhaust are doing the best they can).
I don't know what an intake muffler is -- but I will figure it out. Best guess is to keep the noise level down so that Ford could put more sound through the exhaust, since overall noise level is mandated.
                Hmmmmm.....

The muffler snaps to the front of the airbox.

                      Hi there,

Jim, I spent about half an hour yesterday looking for the 'snap-on' air intake muffler. The only part that I could see that had 'snap-on' fittings was the air filter itself.

(I was just curious after reading your post so I thought I'd check it out).

Either I'm looking in the wrong place and have completely missed something, or, the part you have removed is the air filter which I'm sure you wouldn't have done that.

My first thought was that your's might be a 2002 model with a different layout. When I checked back though, you have a 2004. Mine is a 2003 so I guess they should be the same.

Any ideas on where I'm going wrong?

                      Thanks, Gordon.

                        Hi Gordon,
You have to remove the airbox.
Remove the big plastic cover over the radiator.
Remove the 1 screw that holds the airbox down, loosen the big hose clamp on the engine side and pull the hose off. Now pull up on the airbox. It plugs into a hole underneath. Now remove the airbox from the car. Look at the molded plastic thing where the air goes in. Look inside the airbox where it snaps in. Just wiggle it a little and it snaps out.
                        Good Luck

sounds like the engine air filter to me - not going to happen.

                            Hi again,

Thanks Jim for the more detailed description of the operation. After my look around under there yesterday, I do recognise all the bits that you mention. In fact the bit that you pulled off I did grapple with for a short while but I wasn't 100% sure I had the right part.

What happens to the hole that's left after you have removed the baffle box? Is there a chance that unwanted bits, (insects, grit, etc), could be sucked into the combustion chambers because if I'm visualising this correctly, this section is coming after the air filter.

I will probably give it a try once more as I am curious to hear what it sounds like.

Thanks again for the clarification. Gordon.

                              Me again,

Dot, that was my first thought as well, that Jim had actually removed the filter.

However, since my foraging around yesterday combined with Jim's more detailed description, I am now fairly sure that the piece removed is not the air filter.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but is the part that we are calling the 'intake muffler' the piece that is hanging below the intake pipe and air box just before it connects to the engine? I was about to pull that piece off but I was obscured because I hadn't removed the plastic radiator cover and I could not see how this piece was connected to the air box above.

I kind of chickened out because I didn't want to force something that might have had some kind of seal around it.

It's interesting though so I will check it out again but this time with the radiator cover off first.

                              Gordon.
