The Ford dealer got a complete front clip but it was in very poor condition. If they have to go new parts the cost would be more than the car is worth and it would be totaled.
We would prefer to get the car repaired instead of getting a check and buying anothe car. We are trying to work with the insurance co.
The dealer told us that they can not locate another clip so I thought I would try. This seems like the logical place to start. I might get lucky.
Wow! That doesn't sound right. What kind of money are they talking about if they total it? Should be at least Kelly Blue Book value or sometimes if you can find the same year and model they'll buy it for you if it's priced right. What insurance company are you dealing with? I hope it's not the same one I have. Leroy
Leroy, State Farm will pay you about $1,800. for replacement of the front bumper cover, grill and paint. I believe the cover alone from Ford is $1,200.
The insurance co will pay somewhere in between I assume. Do not have the figuire as yet. That is if it is totaled and not repaired.
Those prices sure look low to me but that's the book value.
Like a salesman on a lot told me Kelly Bluebook does not buy cars. Of course he was talking about the price he wanted on a Thunderbird. But when it comes to buying them they want to low ball them below book.
Brad, The last time I had to deal with my insurace co. my Wife hit a deer with a 2 year old SUV. They had it taken to the shop of their choice and that shop estimated the bill at $8k. By the time the truck was done and out the door the bill was $11K. All I paid was for the $500.00 deductable Progressive pciked up the rest. As soon as I got it back I dumped it and bought her a new car, I didn't trust the new air bags installed by that garage. I'm not with Progessive now, I've got a better rate with AIG. I don't see how State Farm can put a limit on how much they will pay on any particular repair. I've never heard of anything like that. That's not the kind of coverage I want. It would seem to me that they would be liable for any repairs unless they totaled more than the car is worth. Leroy
It's more than the cost of the repair when insurance figures a total. They take the cost of repairs plus the salvage value of the vehicle and add those two figures together. If that number then exceeds the replacement value they then total it. Say a car replacement value is $20,000 and the repair cost is $13,000 and the salvage value of the vehicle is $9,000, Repairs & salvage total to $22,000 and the replacement value is $20,000 the car is then totaled because repairs and salvage came to $2,000 more than replacement value.

Lon,
What you said is correct, but sometimes even if the repair cost plus salvage value doesn't equal or exceed the actual cash value, the insurance company will total the car rather than dealing with possible additional hidden damage that could be found later, and dealing with extensive rental car (if applicable) expense while the repairs are ongoing. Also some states might have a requirement that a car be totaled if the damage exceeds a certain percentage of the actual cash value.

Ok, here's the way I see it. The car's damage is the liability of the insurance company. If they can show the cars fair market value is less than the cost of the repairs, then that's the amount they're liable for minus your deductable. Now, the car is still yours and you should get the salvage value also. So I would think if they came up with at least $12K and you got $8K for the wreck, you would be able to replace your car.
