    Re: Battery Costs?

I looked around and found several sealed battery boxes that people use for moving the battery for racing. They also have a vent tube.

The prices vary from about $70 to about $140 depending on where you buy it and what it is made of.

It seems that you could buy one of these boxes and a new battery for little more than the cost of a Ford battery and then the next time you need a battery, you can buy anything you want.

I know that there are some purists out there who will say you can only use the Ford battery, but if you install the box carefully, you can always remove it and put the original battery back in.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking too. Moving to the sealed box required for NHRA Saftey Tech would be good enough for me.

David, you should have mentioned the battery while you were at Desert Thunder II. Team Ford sells them for $109. Bill Green was at Team Ford twice and could have picked it up. Unless of course you already had bought one. I bought one at Team Ford just before DT II. Oh and my vent tube was rectangle and not oval.

Lon: I bought one for $107 at my local Lincoln dealer and installed it before I left Nashville. My old one was still good, but I didn't want to take a chance with it a million miles from home and a 7 year old battery.

              Don't put it off Mark!

I watched the Tech check mine out on a maintenance visit prior to DTII. My battery tested fine.

I chose to replace it for the trip.

Good thing I did! The shop checked out my old one after I left, and they said it had a short!

                Re: Battery Costs?

Saw a deal on Modern Marvels last night about lead. They featured a company called EnerSys which manufactures an automotive battery called Odyssey. According to the show this particular company puts twice the number of lead plates in their batteries which enable them to hold their charges longer and last longer. I think 12 years? Has anyone heard of these guys? --> http://www.odysseyfactory.com/batteries.html

Why not just use an OPTIMA gel battery? I have them on all my old Mustangs. They do not require a vent and can even be mounted sidways or upside down if one wanted. Similar price at about $180 but they have no fumes to worry about... Anyone know of a reason this would NOT work?

The Odyssey battery does list a replacemet for the T-Birds. Wonder how much they coat?

One thing I forgot to mention. They (Odyssey batteries) are made from 99.99% pure lead, other batteries are some lead alloy. When it's time, I know what I'm buying.

                          Re: Battery Costs?

I checked today with a battery supplier in Michigan City, Indiana that sells the Odyssey batteries and he told me he didn't have one in stock, but could order me one that would fit in the T-Bird battery compartment. It's a group size 65 and is not a vented battery but it is a sealed battery that is guarenteed not to leak. It comes with a 4 year fully replaceable warranty. The price I was given was $315.99 plus tax. I think if I were in need of a battery for my Bird I would get one. Leroy

Would the Odessey battery have the same problem as the Optima battery?

Just went out to start the Caddy....dead battery. What's up with these new batteries? If I need a new one, this will be the third battery on an '06 DTS!
