    Re: Battery Costs?

As you know, I bought a new battery for $109.00 just before our trip to Desert Thunder II. When I got home, I found a coupon in te mail from Ford for a refund of $20.00 off the total cost of $99.00.

I just took back my old core for the $6.00 refund and got an additional $10.00 back to balance the cost to match the coupon. So, when I get my mail-in rebate, the total cost will be $79.00. Not too bad at all. :)

I'd say that you should suspect a short somewhere's - I've had Caddy's since 1958 and run them typically 150,000 miles over 6-7 years and never had to replace a battery. (Knock on wood) 2004 currently has 70,000 miles

        Re: Battery Costs?

I'm having a hard time following why anyone would consider paying 3 times the cost of a Ford battery that has lasted 7 years or more in the vast majority of our cars, when the advertised longevity for the Odyssey is less than twice that. Is there some reason I'm missing?

The batteries in these cars have not been a problem and I would say have been very good. I imagine that is primarily due to their being the trunk away from the heat of the engine bay.

Once again, David falls into a great deal. Brother, with your luck perhaps you should take up gambling. Maybe you did while we were in Vegas?

          Re: Battery Costs?

2K2BIRD, The artical I read says the Odyssey battery life is 8 to 12 years and is warrantied for 4. It's a drycell battery compared to an acid filled. It has a storage life of 2 years, before loosing power, compared to the average battery of 6 to 12 weeks. ( something to keep in mind for Winter storage ). Since the battery doesn't leak it can be transported by air as compared to a acid filled battery that can only be shipped by ground becuase it's a Hazardous Material, the Odyssey is not. At the end of life of a Odyssey it slowly loses power compared to a sudden failure by a conventional battery. I think what we were trying to establish here is a safe alturnative to the vented Motorcraft battery should they become extinct. Just something to think about. Leroy

            Re: Battery Costs?

I see where you are going Leroy. I edited my post to say the longevity was less than twice the 7 years which is what I meant to say.

I suppose somewhere down the line it could make sense if the Motorcraft battery is unavailable but for now I'd have a hard time feeling like it was a good idea - at least for most folks.

What Paul said. And to add 1 thing ... even Odyssey doesn't recommend their battery for our TBirds.

See post 30 of this thread where Optima responded to a query with these words:

Unfortunately we are not able to recommend a certain model for your vehicle. Your vehicle
needs a battery that can be vented to the outside. Although Optimas are completely sealed batteries, if your alternator malfunctions or the battery is overcharged, valves can open and gas can be released.

                        Re: Battery Costs?

I think the Odyssey is the best alturnative anyone has come up with so far, becuase it's a not made with any hazardous material or acid and completly out lasts and out preforms the standard vented battery. Also I would think that possibly in time the price might go down as this type of battery with all it's advantages becomes more popular and is copied by other manufacturers. Leroy

                          Re: Battery Costs?

I have been reading this battery thread and decided to go ahead and replace what I thought was the original battery in my 2002 today. I bought my car from a Ford dealer in Georgia in December of 2003 with 900 miles on the speedo. I was told the car had never been titled and belonged to a Ford exec.

I took my car to my small town Ford dealer in Alabama and they replaced the battery for 109.00 plus tax plus 10.80 to install it. The interesting part was that the battery I have been driving with since 2003 (I now have 37,000 miles on the car) was not the original battery or the correct battery. It was a Motorcraft but was not a vented battery. I guess I was lucky that I never had any failure with the battery.
I hope that I get as good of service from the correct battery as i did from the incorrect one!

Are the Britax pads ceramic by any chance?
