  • Armrest wear

I had a detailer look at the door armrests containing the power window buttons because they are becoming more scratched every day. He said that is a Ford problem and he can fix it for $120 per door...removing, repainting and coating with an anti-scratch finish. I'm inclined to go ahead with it because I don't have any other solution. Does anybody?
    Thanks for any help.

    Re: Armrest wear

If you are talking about the piece that surounds the door lock and power window controls you can buy new ones for about thirty four dollars each and you can install them your self.

Thanks, Charles. I'll see my Ford dealer Monday. Question, since the detailer said it was a typical Ford problem, would you advise putting a protective coating on the parts? Any suggestions what that coating might be.

      Thanks

You can get that really slick clear plastic. My grandmother had it on her sofa. It was great when it was hot!

I'm wondering why "they are becoming more scratched every day"? My car is almost 7 years old and no scratches anywhere on the armrests, its not "a Ford problem". The armrests aren't scratching themselves, it has to be something you are doing to scratch them. Maybe your watch band or ring?

I agree. I don't have any scratches on either one of my armrests either.

                Re: Armrest wear

Several weeks ago I noticed that a big piece had broken off the corner of the arm rest on the driver's side. Can't figure out how it happened only thing I can figure is when I had it at the dealers for an oil change. Hey Charles where can you order the replacements from? I'd much rather buy the parts myself.

Joe, thanks for the info on the clear plastic covers for the armrest. Was your grandmother Italian? Only kidding, mine was Irish but I do remember the covers.....maybe I should stick clear contac paper on 'em for a super classy look.

I'm surprised to hear that nobody has the problem. We have a local club here and at least two other owners have the same problem. The material has a very soft coating...just a fingernail will scratch it. It might be worth a try to just scrape the whole thing.....but after I have ordered the new replacements.

Well they say a picture is worth a thousand words so here is a picture of the armrest showing the area where the piece broke off. If any one has any sources for the replacement parts let me know.

                        Re: Armrest wear

Well I finally picked up the new plactic piece to replace the broken one. I ordered it from my Ford dealer & the cost wasn't bad at $22.10. I thought that I could just pop out the old piece & put in the new one but the door lock & window controls stay attached to the old unit. Take a look at the new photos showing the new piece & the old one being lifted up. If anybody knows how the controls come off let me know.

Since the top appears to be a cover and Ford sold it to you loose, there must be some clips that hold the two pieces together.
not sure if that's covered in the workshop manuals. will look.

looks to me there is a little tit on both sides of the switch...should be able to push those in...or lightly pry the the arm rest over those and the switches should drop out the bottom....then just snap back in the new piece...
