  • GLASS PROBLEMS

I have not posted for a while but I am still hear and still have my bird. I have a question.

I washed my 2002 red bird the other day and while cleaning the windows I noticed that all of the windows except the rear soft top window have developed hundreds of small pin point size dots between the laminated glass. I do not know about the hard top glass as it is stored. Have any of you experienced this? What do you think causes it? My car is stored in a heated garage, it is five years old as of September, it has 16000 miles. Any ideals??

Also I have a 7 year premium bumper to bumper Ford warranty. Do you think this would be covered. It is only noticeable in the direct sun light, but when I drive in to the sun it creates sort of a haze.

When I was younger I would fool; with old cars a bit and I seem to remember having glass problems, however I do not think five years is that old.

    Thanks for your help.

Some tinted eyeglasses causes tinted car glass to appear to be blotched or have dots.

        Re: GLASS PROBLEMS

My 05 Bronze bird windshield developed air bubbles in the lamination at the bottom - driver side. There were a line of bubbles for a distance of 9-12 inches and from 1/32 to 1/16 inch diameter just above the dash left to right, and not equally spaced nor on the same plane. I showed them to the dealer, and his body shop manager. They agreed this was a defect and ordered a new winshield which they installed under the 3yr warrantee . And yes, the new windshield has the thunderbird logo in the center, so it was a Ford replacement.

They were just above the dash and ran about 9 to 12 inches across the windshield left to right. I'm guessing they were about 1/32 to 1/16 round, not evenly spaced no on the same plane. I showed them to my dealer's shop foreman and body shop man and they agreed it was a defect. They ordered a new windshield and installed it under the 3 yr warrantee.

Mike, the minute dots you see iimpregnated in the glass are there on purpose. You'll find them in the side windows and the windshield. I'm not sure of their purpose but I remember reading about it back in 2001 or 2002. You won't always see them, just when the sun is at a certain angle, usually in the early morning or late afternoon light.

              Re: GLASS PROBLEMS

I have noticed a problem with my front windshield. No matter how clean I try to get it, it just never feels smoothe. I have used all types of window cleaners and boy it sure is a job to get clean. I remember years ago people talked about some glass being more pourous than others. Just wondering if a cheaper form of glass was used. I only notice it on the front.

                Re: GLASS PROBLEMS

As I recall it is an expensive glass due to the curvature of the glass - I would think it also needed to be strong to handle the curves.

As for a cleaner for the glass, several years ago, someone found that DIET coke made a real good glass cleaner for the vinyl haze that develops on the inside of the glass. I'd just make sure that you protect the dash with a towel if using that method.

In Fl. the dash haze can drive you nuts.I use white vinegar and water in a spray bottle,it cuts everything.I also use a cloth napkin from a restaurant.Another good item a large white coffee filter.Saw this used in diners for the mirrors and leaves no streaks. You would have to get them at a restaurant supply or leave the waitress a better tip

                      Re: GLASS PROBLEMS

I was at a cruise night, and mentioned to Wes (Bird03), that I was ready to take a baseball bat to my windshield.....it was so pitted (so I thought).

Not sure what he used, but it looks brand new, and I tried everything. I know the final thing he used was RainEx. Maybe he'll chime in.....

                        Re: GLASS PROBLEMS

Yeah Barbara, that was Rainex windshield wax (not the regular Rainex that comes in the spray bottle). It did a good job on your windshield. It is harder to work with than the regular Rainex as it doesn't spread out as evenly and you must buff out the resulting haze before you are done (I almost thought I wasn't going to get the haze off). It took quite a while to do that, but the results were great.

We missed step one because I didn't have any with me, but I would normally clay bar the windshield before applying the Rainex.

I have a 03 Thunderbird and I have the same problem I have used glass cleaners even went to 0000 steel wool which made the glass real slick and the windows go up faster but spots are still there, untill I seen the other posts here I never thought it may be in the laminate... Just checked the local Ford dealer and the glass ( drivers side) is not covered under the Ford extended warranty was told a replacement was $695.00 plus labor....

                              Hi..

I never saw anyone mention about the de-laminated glass.. My windshield.. passenger side only has tons of big bubbles... of course my wawrrantry is out... baseball bat here I come... ha...but until then. I also had asked my dealership about any complaints, and of course he said NO... there was no re-call... maybe we could all go the same week and get there attention.
