  • New Car Prices are coming down

As some of you know we are fairly new to the Retro experience, and truly love it. Back in June when we bought our bird we were actually looking at a Prius. Go Green - High Gas prices and all. At that time Toyota dealers here in the Dallas were selling New - Sight Unseen – Prius cars for $5,000 OVER LIST. You got on a list and could purchased the next one they received. Could not order color equipment etc.
I just received an email from the Toyota dealer. Guess what, they have 6 in stock to choose from and are offering $500 off List!
We are so glad we decided to go ahead and get the T-bird instead of the Prius. Also if we had bought the Prius we would not have become involved with everyone here on the nest.

I understand wanting to do the "green" thing. That is all they preach about out here in Cali that and Prop 8. I do sit on the fence about doing what is right with the environmental thing, so I try to buy free range chicken, organic milk, wild caught fish ect. But when it comes to my vehicle... I WANT WHAT I WANT! If I have the V8 that sucks down the gas I better not complain about me not getting the bang for my buck at the gas station... I chose to buy the V8. Thats just me and how I feel. Like my in-laws want to know why I bought a 2 seater...they want to know where I'm going to put their future grandchildren LOL!! Yeah right Earlier this year we bought a F150 lifted 4x4 that takes about $100 to fill up and we go through a tank in about 8-9 days. We grin and bare it because he really loves his truck and wouldn't want any other truck. So if you are happy with your Bird and its working for you... sounds like you bought the right car to me.

Of course I have come up with my own argument about going green when I bought my T-Bird. Since I bought a used car and not a new one I look at it as "recycling". Instead of purchasing something new that required all the energy to produce I just bought a recycled car. I figure recycling an older car that uses a little more gas is much greener than buying a new Prius. It is also MUCH more FUN!!!!

Re: New Car Prices are coming down

I personally think there is a lot of flawed thinking when it comes to newer cars with V-8 engines. Regardless of the mileage posted on the sticker. All Three of my 2002-2004 Birds have averaged 22-26 mpg. A lot of 6cyl out there can't claim that.

Mamabird sums it up for me.With the Caddy DTS I never though about gas bought the Bird because I deserved it My way of going green I save all my plastic and alum. cans for recycle before I threw them into the garbage.

For me it comes down to: "how long does it take to remove the top on that Prius."

To add to my post ,I was reading in the paper about how the auto industry is suffering with the Unions.Big 3 are paying $80+ to include benefits were as Toyota America pays $48 with no Union. My question ,Toyota cars cost as much as the Big 3 so were is the "profit" going ???? BUY AMERICAN keep the money here.

The missing piece of your puzzle is the fact that (I'll use GM as an example) GM looses about $1,300 to $1,600 dollars per car they make and sell. They are burning through $4 Billion dollars a month (that's loss) just to keep workers working. This isn't something new, they have been losing money for years. They only make money on a few SUV models, and pickup trucks. When the gasoline prices topped over $3.50 a gallon, they began slashing prices and losing money on those vehicles too. Honda, Toyota, etc do NOT lose money on each car they make because they do not have the 40 year legacy retirement and benefits that the big three have. You can buy EVERY car that the big three can possibly produce at max capacity, and they will still lose money and fail. It's a pyramid scheme that has gone out of control.

As to what Toyo/Honda/Subaru is doing with all their money, they are busy building new plants and hiring more people to keep up production -though Honda recently pulled out of America building their Accords back to Japan.

I am from strong Union roots (UMWA), but even the strongest union men from Southern WV coal fields have pretty much found them crooked and useless in representing the interest of the workers. (some) Unions aren't what they use to be. *sigh*

It is amazing how much Carmax has reduced their prices and after 2 weeks on the lot I notice they begin the $500 deduction process ...

In regard to the topic of this thread, while having the Shelby in for service, we wandered around the lot looking at new vehicles, just for fun (we're not in the market). Came upon a '09 tricked out Eddie Bauer Expedition, list price approx $52,000. Hungry sales guy comes up and says, "I can put you in it today for $27,000". I looked at the sticker, at him, back at the sticker, back at him and said, "You're really desperate, aren't you?" I explained to him that my '00 Eddie Bauer Expediton was in perfect condition due to constant maintenance and only had 36K miles on it. He said it was people like me who were putting him out of business!

I'm in the same boat with my truck... 2003, only 34,000 miles. I'm a bad 'Merican too. I agree with others, it's all just upsetting.

Ya know, I might be for this Big 3 Bail Out if the Big 3 were still made in America by Americans using American made parts and material. But the Big 3 are building cars in Canada and Mexico and buying parts from China and other foregn countries and have already put millions of Americans out of work. Meanwhile Japan invests billons in America, building factories and putting Americans to work with good paying jobs and benifits and buying American made parts and material. Why can't the Big 3 do that? I think it's all about greed, same with the oil industry and the banks and Wall St. And now they want all Americans to come togeather and Bail them out and with no guarentee it will work or we'll ever get paid back. If we do it, it would be like living way beyond our means, just like they have done to get themselves in the mess they're in. I say let them crash and burn, then pick-up whats left and rebuild, and then maybe give them some help with stipulations. Just my opinion. Leroy

There is a desperate and profound lack of understanding of the meaning of globalization in our society. The 'cat is out of the bag' the 'barn door is open' there is absolutely no going back. Denial will only exacerbate the problem. If the world wide credit squeeze has not demontrated the inextricably intertwined nature of world markets than nothing ever will. We must manufacture products and provide services that can compete. This may mean quantum shifts in our economy and so be it. Either we change or die.
