  • SST transmission & oil cooler

I was poking around in my T-Bird file and found my 05 window sticker, as I was reading over it, I found listed along with the SST shift transmission is listed an oil cooler.
QUESTION Did the oil cooler only come with the SST or do all the retro Birds have an oil cooler?

I think the oil cooler was added in 03.

      Thanks
But is the oil cooler there because of the SST?
Or do all the 03-05 have them?

I believe the SST cars only recieved the oil cooler. I noticed that when visiting dealers shopping for our T-bird.

Re: SST transmission & oil cooler

I am going to piggy back on this thread and ask a question - HERE'S MY QUESTION FOR YOU TECHIES: is it possible for a mal-functioning tranny oil cooler to cause a shift/slip problem to manifest?

My 05 has the SST and has chronically exhibited a problem only during warm/hot weather - the shift 'flares' between 3rd and 4th gear shift. Ford calls it a flare, but to me it's almost more of a slip.

They rebuilt the tranny (new torque convertor, etc...see thread below). HOWEVER, now that the weather has warmed some (mid 80's), it's begun to 'flare' again (it did it one day this week 3 times in quick succession). The slip is more common when the weather gets really hot (May through October).

I asked the stat king for a quick study of the stats. He replied that all SST have the cooler and MANY (not all) of the standard auto shift also have it.

Jim--It is possible for a malfunctioning tranny cooler to cause a shift problem. However, if the cooler malfuntions (clogged internally or fouled externally, i.e. high fluid temp), it should set a code in the computer. At least that's what happened on one of my cars-- I got what turned out to be a check transmission light and the transmission started to shift very abruptly. It was later diagnosed as a high fluid temp caused by a clogged cooler. On that car (99 Taurus SHO) the transmission goes to a default/ survival mode and increases fluid pressure and flow (hence harder shifts) to reduce temperature. Shifts returned to normal after things cooled down. Bottom line is that I believe a malfunctioning cooler should set a code but perhaps your cooler is not malfunctioning enough to set a code. I also believe the Ford diagnostic recording system should be able monitor tranny temperature i.e. cooler performance, if they haven't already done so.
              hope this helps
