  • My first COPS problem...

The dealership just called me...Lola is in for a routine maintenance check and an oil change. I told 'em to check for everything, and they just called and said the #4 ignition coil is shot....I guess that explains the intermittent power loss and misfirings I've been getting of late. They told me it'll cost $263.00 to fix. Is that a reasonable price?

Also told them to update her ECM while they were in there (based on some threads I've read recently on TBN).

Compared to what some others have paid that sounds within the ball park. If you can wrench on your car yourself you might want to consider replacing all of them. Since yours is 2002 I believe there is a recall or at least a bullitin that calls for repairs to be made to correct water leaking onto the cops cover on the right bank - might want to ask them about that.

Thanks, will do! I'm not a shade-tree mechanic myself, although I am learning. I don't feel confident enough yet to work on the Bird myself, although I don't mind messing with my old beat up 95 Chevy S-10 pickup. About the only thing I have done myself on the Bird is install the CAI.

I figure if I can find someone to help me around here who knows cars far better than I do, the right tools and a place to work, and a case of beer, I will likely replace the others myself.

Price is not too bad Bobby, I was charged $400 up in No. Carolina for my cars first COP repair of coil #7, and the computer update was included.
Lets wait and see if they find any oil or water when they do the repair. Interesting that you said "Lola is in for a routine maintenance check", did you not get an engine light?

If you were able to put a CAI on then changing the COP's should be a piece of cake. There were threads and pictures on changing them. I forgot who posted them but just look around and you should find them. Good Luck.

Nope...no engine light....it just felt like it drove "funny" sometimes...know what I mean? It did not happen enough, or cause any serious problems such that I made a special trip to the dealership for it. I just asked them to check it out while they were doing the oil change, fluids, hoses, etc. I kinda had a small suspicion it might be that, based on the COPS threads I've read here, but I figured they'd tell me it wasn't that. I was actually suprised when they told me it was...go figure.

I'd change all 4 on that side if I were you. The others will go out and you'll be duplicating the cost. If another one goes out, you'll know it is on the other side. The labor to change 1 or 3 is the same, just the cost of the COPS.

David's right. You should be able to negotiate a cheaper price with all four as well. The book price you were quoted is for accessing the bank and the replacement. They only have to open the bank once if doing all four.

If there's no water/oil contamination, consider changing only the boots on the other three.

From past threads, the computer update is the most dramatic in the '02's......wear your seatbelt.

Also, ask for the three good ones back, that way you'll have spares that someone can put in, if needed, in a pinch.
