  • Finally a Positive Comment About Our Birds ...

My Collectible Automobile arrived today. There is a story on page 44 about "Emerging Collector Cars from the Last Quarter Century". On page 48 there is a sidebar where the CA staff selects their picks: Of the 9 staffers Publisher Frank Peiler chose our RetroBird as the future collectible for 2002. Although only one staffer chose the Bird the picks seemed all over the charts so there was no consensus for the year 2002 or any year for that matter.

Then on page 68 there is a profile of the publisher himself. On page 71 there is a reprint of 50's Rod & Custom magazine's cover where Peiler had pinned a customized draft of a 57 Thunderbird.

BTW, there is a story about the AMC Pacer. The gyst of the story is the Pacer took off selling like hotcakes the first year it was produced in 1975. By 1976 sales had cooled by 50%, AMC had cranked up production to meet anticipated demand, and then the models sat on dealer lots and failed to meet unreasonable sales expectations.

I don't care what most of the naysayers on this site are saying about the collectibility of our Birds. There will be no new Birds. They do not make them anymore. The Retro Bird still turns heads. They are a joy to own. The design is pure Thunderbird. According to a site poll more than half the retros have been bought used. There is a market. And it's an indisputable fact that the people who buy them, love them as did the original owners.

I love my car. It's a Black Ford roadster with a V-8 engine, 5 speed trans. and loud pipes. It's got Red and Black leather seats, a Stereo radio with CD player and Air Conditioning. And it's paid for. What more could a guy want. Oh Yea! It's a Thunderbird.

We have a local car critic and radio guy by the name of Ed Wallace here in the Dallas area. He is really high on our birds as future collectors. Very unusual for him because he is normally a hard critic, but for our birds he thinks they are THE collector car for the early part of the century.

That's good to hear about him, Johnny. I had an "email" talk with him several years ago when he reviewed the 2003 Tbird and used 2002 stats for the engine, etc.... He said it was the material given to him by staff but it did make him aware that there are Thunderbird enthusiasts reading his articles.

These Birds were considered collectible from the time production started. Does anyone on this list know of anyone who colects "Car and Driver" magazines ?

I have 9 issues from when the cars were new including their 03 test report, but don't need to "collect" this latest issue.

They were the first to "spy report" the car back before the concept was announced. I don't recall subscribing to them at the time.
