Re: C ops Club
All it takes is just one failure to join the despised "Bad Cop Club".
Anybody notice that new members are routinely now reporting a COP failure? Seems like since these cars are now being sold to 2nd and 3rd owners, and the garage queens are now being driven as they were originally intended to, this problem is beginning to surface more and more.
I have to wonder if those 02 owners who treated their cars as garage queens really did not do any favors for those of us who drive their car on a daily basis. How was Ford to know there was a COP problem on the 02's when so many owners refused to put any mileage on them?

Re: C ops Club
Are COP problems found on all 02 - 05 TBirds but more common on the 02? How do I know if I have a COP problem? What does the car do (or not do)? My 02 is my everyday driver now. I guess from the thread that is a good thing.

Re: C ops Club
I posted this on another thread.
This is my actual letter to Rep. Marion Berry (D) Arkansas

Area of Interest: casework
Correspondence: I am writing today to express grave concerns for my 2002 Ford Thunderbird. It is my understanding that Ford Motor Company has extended the warranty for model years 2003-2005 for the Coil Over Plug (COP) ignition system, but has chosen to omit the 2002 model year even though a majority of 2002-2005 Thunderbirds were produced in model year 2002. My concern is that many owners of the 2002 model year have experienced COP failures which have rendered their cars virtually inoperable without notice of the impending failure. To take this a step further, imagine driving on a high speed interstate and have the system fail. The car is designed to go into "limp" mode whereby the car cannot go any faster than 25 mph. This is a potential accident waiting to happen! Not only is this a safety issue, it the repairs are costing owners of 2002 cars in excess of $1,500 where owners of 2003 - 2005 models are covered for 10 years/100,000 miles free of charge for the exact same failure. This inequity must seriously be investigated and corrected. Does the NHTSA have this responsibility? Please feel free to ask me any questions. My car has 4,100 miles and has had no problems yet, but I am writing you because of the many owners who are affected or will be affected by this obvious oversight in Ford's warranty addition. Respectfully submitted, Russell H. Patton III

I just checked Dot's Bad COP Poll #2....There are as many bad COP's in the '02's as all the other years combined!
I can't tell if the poll is still open, as I've already voted....do you know?

I've had all mine replaced, some twice. Last time I just changed all the boots. Hasn't been quite a year yet, but it's the longest I've gone without a problem......(any wood around here)

There's a reason why Ford refuses to acknowledge the COP problem with the 02 cars and I think it is because the cars weren't driven normal yearly mileage and Ford wasn't aware there was a problem.
And that's just my humble opinion...... If you've got some other explanation why we are seeing more and more of these older cars reported as having COP problems, you tell me why?

Re: C ops Club
When you look at yearly production numbers, it's obvious that the '02 Bird will have more reports of bad cops whether they have been driven or not.
Per Dot's site (if I looked at the right numbers):
'02 - 31,368
'03 - 14,678
'04 - 12,757
'05 - 9,295

Re: C ops Club
Next month I will have owned my TBird for two years. I have put about 7000 miles on it since I've owned it and have never had any kind of problem. Yes! it's a Garage Queen, it's not driven in the Winter months and never intentionally taken out in the rain. It's always covered when not being driven, and is kept spotless at all times. I take it to my Ford dealer regularly for oil changes and tire rotation. I have an extended premium Care Warranty with zero deductable good till August of 2011. No, I'm not a member of the Cops Club, Borla Club or the Trunk Rack Club. Just a TBNer that takes care of his car as long as I own it and not preserving for the next owner. Shame on me for not driving #^*& out of it. Leroy
