One more note on this subject: The Ford mechanic who worked on my car said that he had made the same repair on several Jaguars, but no other T-birds. Of course Corinth, MS is a relatively small market. His story was that the transmissions had sat on a shelf in a Jaguar warehouse for 'who knows how long' before Ford dropped them into the T-birds. Apparently, even though the transmission is a sealed unit, moisture got into some of them.
Oh, well. The transmission and brakes are now as good, actually better, than new. Nothing that 11% of what I paid for the car and three days in the shop couldn't fix. At least now I can start to enjoy it.
Glad to hear you were able to get it fixed. When a (new) car breaks down, it colors your perception of the whole ownership experience. I normally never get an extended warranty, but... it is standard practice for American made cars for me. In 2003 I bought a new Ford Sport Trac, which broke down twice in the first 3 months (4wd unit kept disengaging and preventing the truck from engaging in drive). After it was fixed, it's been super reliable ever since, and I still drive the truck.
I bought the Tbird last year used, and got a long warranty for it.
Now that it is fixed, just enjoy and don't give it a second thought.
