    Hello

I see that many times there are hard tops for sale on ebay. From the auctions I have looked at, most or all advertise that it is a shell only. I understand that to mean that all of the cloth material (headliner) is missing.

Just wondering what the next step is? Is there some place that makes the headliners for these cars? Or, do folks just use them the way they are? I assume the headliner is not available at Ford.

Just wondering how folks adapt to this situation.

    Thanks,

    Bruce

With the shell only - besides the headliner, you would need lots of other pieces to complete the hardtop including windows (rear & portholes), window trim, header, hardware for attaching the top, rubber seals and who knows what else. Back in the day it was said that it would take about $5000 in parts to put a top together. I'm sure you couldn't even get the parts these days.

There are lots of complete tops that come up on ebay, Craigs list and even here from time to time. Just bide you time and a deal should eventually come your way.

I agree. It's like having 2 different cars in one garage.

bgl, I've seen tops go for as high as $2000.00 on ebay, alot depends on the color and the condition. White tops I think are the best sellers because the go with alot of other colors. Most tops for sale are from owners that had the top off and thier car was wrecked or stolen and they have no use for it any longer. Things to look for on a top before you buy it are scratches, cracked molding, headliner, and weather stripping. Also be sure to get the stand, cover and removal tool or be compensated if anything is damaged or missing. Example, I found my top on craigslist.com, it was in a storage locker that had been abandoned. The owner of the lockers was selling the contents for back rent. I got the top for $400.00 with-out the stand, cover or tool and some slight scratches. There were also some damage to two pieces of molding that I had to replace and I also replaced all the weather stripping. So now with about $650.00 invested, I have a Mountain Shadow Grey top on my Evening Black Bird. I love the contrasting colors. Also be aware of our Hard Top Relay. If you buy a top on ebay for example, it's possible that we could relay it to you by members putting it on thier cars and moving it your way untill it gets to you. Saves you from paying to have it shipped or driving thousands of miles to get it. Leroy

There were two tops on ebay in the last month or so with opening bids in the $1300 range that didn't get a single bid. The auctions didn't include the stand or cover, but were complete tops.
