      Re: COPS

I've had 4 replaced so far by my local L/M dealer. No charge just made sure engine light came on both times. They read the code and had me out in 2-3 hrs both times.

4 replaced for me in the last 6 months. No issues until 59K. Just had another go bad last week. Check engine light never did come on this last one. Started missing sitting in drive with Brake on and ran very rough getting on highway. Now at 65K.

            Re: COPS

I've just joined the club. My car was surging at low RPM and didn't seem to have the same power. Dealer says a COP was damaged by oil leaking from a valve cover. No engine light to indicate an issue. No warranty for me; with diagostics, parts and labor this is a $1000 repair-OUCH!

.....Welcome Marc!....My best before date expired at 120226km. when the check engine light came on....had all 8 spark plugs replaced and #7 coil replaced...I knew the oil pan gasket was leaking, had that replaced...have some valve cover seepage..that will drip on the exhaust manifold occasionally....holding off for now as it is a 5hour job, apparently...total for work performed by an independant garage $773.57cdn.

                Re: COPS

I had 2 COPS replaced at around 55,000 miles. Going
to New Orleans last week, the dreaded miss started
again, with 86,000 miles on the car.

When we got home Sunday, Bill Green, Paul Thomas
and myself pulled all 8 COPS and Plugs out. Picked up
the COPS and plugs from a Ford dealer Monday AM, and
by 9:30, 02TBIRD was good to go.

I didn't realize how 'crappy' the car was running until all
8 were replaced. If you have any COP problems, I would
advise to replace all 8 COPS and plugs at the same time.
It makes a world of difference. From what is being said, the
newer COPS are an improved version of our original COPS.

Thanks to Bill and Paul for their help. (Actually Bill did most
of the wrenching, and a very good job at that). Paul and I
                were his helpers.

                  Re: COPS

How difficult is it to replace a coil? I chose to get this done by the dealer since I didn't know what the problem was when I brought it in and I've never replaced one before. I know this will happen again based on what I've read in this thread and I'd rather spend that kind of money for Borla's. Has someone at TBN ever described the steps to do this?

I just joined the club. Went in. They found #6 was misfiring with a bad cop. they replaced it and the plug. When they test drove it #8 failed. New coil and plug on 8. Running like new again.

                      Gary, Bill and Paul,
We need to make a step-by-step video showing COP replacement. I think it would give a lot of people the information they need to do this job under the shade tree with the stereo playing classic 50s-60s music.

After helping with the COPectomy and reimplantation my take on the process is that it is not really difficult with the proper tools and a few extra hands to help hold tools/parts/lights and move things out of the way that are under the hood. Also be prepared to leave some blood and sweat in the engine bay. The plugs can be a bear to get out and there are a lot of sharp edges in there.

Gary's engine showed absolutely no sign of oil or water seeping into the plug wells. I still be believe that heat is the big culprit in causing some inferior quality COPs to fail prematurely in some cars. Per the maintenance schedule, these are supposed to last at least 100K miles before replacement - hopefully, the new ones truly are improved and will do a better job of doing just that.

After extended warranties run out, I think everyone would be miles ahead to do like Gary and replace them all if one fails. At least replace all of them on the side of the failed one while the cover is off. It is not that much more work to replace four than it is to replace one.
