My TBird was sitting in my driveway and I heard a W00000SE sound and the window on the drivers side of my TBird exploded outward and shattered. It was not hot out or anything and can't understand why this happened. It could not have been too hot in the car with the converible top on and temperatures only 85. I read on the internet that the sulfate used to make the glass can cause this reaction sometimes. Anyway they want to charge me $500 to replace the side window. Has anyone had this happen before and can you recommend a cheaper place to get the glass. I'm in Georgia.

Re: Exploding window
Never tried replacing the side glass, however it was also made with the same composition as the windsheild ie it's impregnated with very fine gold dust as I recall (which can be seen at a certain angle of light). I can't imagine though that it's that expensive even though it is a curved piece of glass. Have you tried contacting a carlite glass repair shop?Limited Edition databases for 007 msg..#26 , PCR sticky, and Cashmere msg.#64

Being as you at no fault whatsoever for this occurence, would your insurance company do anything for you? I assuming this would come under the comprehensive coverage.

If it exploded outward check for a little hole in the softtop. Maybe someone took a shot at your car with a pelletgunSometimes Birds travel far...

Re: Exploding window
I would contact a local Ford or LM dealer and find out were they would have new glass installed. $500.00 sounds way to high for a side window, I was quoated that much for a new windshield on a TBird I was looking at for sale that had a cracked windshield. I can't imagine what could build up enough pressure inside the car to blow it out, other than an air bag deploying? Leroy

Re: Exploding window
I'm with Fritz on this one, BB or pellet gun will do this, if a car was driving by it can also happen with a small stone.
Ask your dealership who they use for glass. I got lucky when I needed a windshield and my FORD dealership only charged me what the glass shop charged them (considerably less than the prices I was quoted when I called around.)

Re: Exploding window
Is there any chance the drop glass didn't drop the last time the door was opened and then it was shut up against the weatherstrip instead of inside of it? I think that would cause a lot of pressure against the side of the glass and would possibly force it outward if it broke? When my battery was low, one time the drop glass didn't drop and I was afraid to shut the door.Cal - Yellow premium, full accent - #4127

Re: Exploding window
Stan, I am with you. Every standard insurance policy with comprehensive coverage (fire, theft, vandalism, collision) will pay for glass replacements. It is automatic & FULL coverage with any windshield.
I cannot imagine any T BIrd owner NOT having comprehensive coverage. Your deductible may apply, but the rest will be paid for.
Am I missing something here? Some of the posts sound like this is a MAJOR tragedy.
BTW, this happened to me in a previous car - my neighbor was edging his lawn and a pebble hit the passenger window and it smashed into a million pieces and landed in the driveway.Tom

Re: Exploding window
There is no reason to have Comprehensive coverage with that high a deductible. Collision, yes - comprehensive, no. Glass breakage is one of the most frequently covered perils - many glass companies even pay your deductible up to $150 or so.Originally posted by yelobird2002 View PostAs with my collision coverage, my comprehensive coverage has a $1,000.00 deductible. Has to be pretty major before I turn over to insurance.
Consider this a lesson learned and change it to $150. With the strong likelihood of covering another glass peril, you aren't saving much at all by having it as high as you do.

Re: Exploding window
A word of advise don't assume you have coverage on all glass.Ins. co. are giving glass coverage but it's NOT FULL GLASS coverage it's windsheild only. When I renewed my policy I had to tell them I wanted full glass coverage.Best to check with you ins.co. and make sure. Also check your homeowners policy if it happened on property sometimes it will cover .$500 sounds a bit muchsigpic
