  • Electric hoist leaking oil

Has anyone, that owns an electric hardtop hoist, had an oil leak?
I've got a note into the supplier but was curious if anyone else had a problem:

I've got the same thing except no leaking so far!

I remember Russell, you helped me a few years back with some info when I was buying the hoist. Mine is ceiling mounted. Now I'm wondering if it should be wall mounted.
Haven't heard back from IMC yet

        Re: Electric hoist leaking oil

Just received this note from IMC:
        "Hello George,
The lubricant is from the gear section of the motor winch. It will
continue to do this because the gears are packed tightly with grease.
The plastic cover material is ABS. If you've mounted it on the ceiling
I will send you a piece of ABS we can use to make a dam. Just glue the
new piece on the lower edge across the front open area. If you've
mounted it on a wall you can stuff a rag or two down behind the spool,
*/clear/* of the spool, to absorb the lubricant. The grease will
thicken during the cold winter months and you possibly wont see any
        leakage until next summer."

Not exactly the answer I thought I would get, but it's an answer. Anyone else out there with this same hoist and leaking?

This thing must be very cheeply made to leak like that, It tells me there are no seals in that thing, It should not leak.

For $600, they ought to send you a new hoist and someone to install it for you!

Or, you could go to Harbor Freight and get their biggest electric hoist for less than $150.

            Just my 2 cents.

That's exactly what I did. I bought the "manual" unit off of Ebay at considerable savings and then bought a Harbor Freight 12V 2000# winch on sale for $40. Works great and no oil or grease leaks.

How old is your unit? Mine came from them when they were in California in July 2003. I have it wall mounted, but haven't noticed anything.

Hi John, I bought it from a member who sold his TBird in 2004 and it was 1 year old so it's a 2003
