I've never heard the Black accent called Black Wood before? I thought it was just Black plastic. Leroy

The Black accent is not plastic...it's wood.

They also did all leather for the accent interior in the 05 med steel blue's with blue accent.

but white accent in the Inca's was lacquer finished as the earlier years. - in fact it was the only other color besides black accent in 05 that had the lacquer finish on the steering wheel and shift knob.

That's true, Dot...they did. Except the MSB's came out that way (leather) from the beginning while the red was changed from a painted finish to leather in '05...that's why I had to investigate before I order the '05 IG.

Jim, I haven't seen a red 05 with the painted finish on the steering wheel. My first red 05 that I saw was at the Texas state fair in Sept 05 and it had the full red leather finish on the steering wheel. I may have taken pictures of it.

Sorry...didn't make myself clear. The 02-04 red's were painted...Ford changed the 05 reds to leather...that's where the change came for the red. The MSB were always leather (no change). Because Ford changed the reds in '05 to leather, I had the dealer contact Ford to MAKE SURE the partial white interior wasn't also changed to leather...I only wanted it if it was lacquered.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to remove the Black finish and then refinish the sterring wheel and shift nob in a clear coat so you could see the true wood grain? I would imagine in time the Black finish would start to wear off anyway. Leroy

FYI--my Torch Red 05 is fully accented Torch Red and has red leather wrap on upper steering wheel and red leather wrap on shifter knob, and it is equipped with the select shift. My 02 TB-blue has TB blue wheel and knob but I thought that it was metal.

                        Lindy:

All '05 Red's with partial/full red interior have the red leather wrapped steering wheel & shift knob. The 02 blue wheel & knob are wood, not metal.

Gee! I wonder if my 04s partial red accent wheel and shift nob are wood? I always assumed that it was plastic. Leroy

Seven years now and I don't knmow how manmy postrs we've had this discussion - It's wood. If you need proof, I suggest you take a saw and cut through the top of your steering wheel.

It sure is fun to see what newer owners THINK their car is all about these days. Most of us that got into retrobird ownership on the ground floor just took the time to find out everything there was to know about them between the debut of the concept car and the delivery of ours to the dealership.

The shift Knob from the LS replaces the TBird knob perfectly and is clear coat wood. I also have an LS steering wheel and will replace its leather covering with wood to match the shift knob. Maybe some time this winter, I will get a chance to work on the steering wheel.

Also, the LS facia cover for the light switch, ignition key, and glove box is wood grained plastic to match the knob. It is just a "pop in" replacement. I put it in my bird.
