  • Custom Wheels

I noticed when I was in Chattanooga that there were quite a few RetroBirds with different wheels and tire combinations other than Ford OEM available wheels.

I have recently purchased a set of Pirellie P-Zero Nero 235/55R/17 tires and have the original painted wheels on my car. The painted wheels are a PITA to keep clean and I like some mods.

What are some of the wheels that have been used to enhance the look?

Has anyone thought of installing a set of Mustang Bullit Wheels....yes I know the bolt pattern is different. 4.25 vs 4.5 offset.

It appears that the Crager Mags would be the closest to the Mustang Bullit wheels. Although I like the gray centres on the Bullit wheels.

        Hmmmmmmmmm!

          Re: Custom Wheels

Crager no longer makes those wheels with our bolt circle / offset. I wanted those when I was looking. My first choice was something like the Magnum 500 wheel with 3 bar spinners, they could have been custom made by a company I sought out (can't remember the company off hand) the cost was going to be around $700.00 each, was simply not willing to pay that much and went a different route. You can see what I ended up with in my gallery, they are also posted on dot's site.

I have been doing a litte research and you can buy an adapter to make the change and they will supply the centering bolts in metric to compensate for the 1/4 inch. The adaptor is 1 inch thick and would push the wheels out that much further but our wheel wells can certainly handle it.

              Bradford,

I like the look and the spinners just finish them off nicely. Very classy!

                    Re: Custom Wheels

I'm not a car person, but am trying to learn. What is all this about "spinners"? So that little thing in the middle spins around? That's it? What's the appeal? Does it spin on it's own as you drive, or is it controlled somehow?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but when someone pays almost $3000 for "spinners", I'm trying to understand why.

                      Re: Custom Wheels

They don't spin around, they don't cost $3k, and if your not a car person, it really dosen't matter. Everyone gets what appeals to THEM. I get what I want.

BTW, Many early roadsters Jaguars, MG's, Austin Healy and many more came wire wire wheels, a single hub and single spinner held the rim on. Many early Thunderbird had wire rims that bolted on with a hub with a decorative spinner that concealed the lug nuts. Simply a styling element.

The wheels themselves cost $2600, not to mention the cost of tires and installation.

I'm just trying to learn more about what "spinners" are and why they cost so much. But thanks for answering all of my questions and for being such a great help!

Don't know where you are pricing your rims, mine didn't cost anywhere near $2600.00, actually about 1/2 that, set of 4 spinners off EBay $30.00, was time for new tires so the installation was going to be incurred to put new tires on the existing rims.

Click on the link in my last post. Someone in another thread mentioned those wheels, and I see they have the spinners on them. But nice to know there are others out there that can be had for cheaper, cause I actually think they look kinda cool!
