  • Soft Top "J" hook screws

After a lot of emails, looking, phone calls, etc. I found the size for the little "set" screw that secures the soft top clamps (J hook). I even tried Team Ford in Vegas all he could find was the "hook" assembly. I had to purchase a box of 100, so I have quite a few left over. If you need a pair, send me a PM, I'll be glad to mail them to you.

BTW: The size is 4mm x .7 x 5mm if you can find a place to sell you just one or two.

Thanks for the info and offer to the membership, Bruce. It looks like I'm going to need to add a replacement parts list to my site now as we start needing parts not available or hard to find thru Ford sources.

The set screws are 'metric' allen screws that should be available at your local industrial hardware or I have seen them in places like home depot. Those 100 will go a long way for the membership. A very generous offer. I contacted my sister in law who works for a industrial tool specialty supply co. and she sent me the long metric bolts that I will use to make the "J" hooks (when I get a minute).

I talked to Pat Kelly,(parts manager) about two weeks ago and he said parts were going fast. If there are any parts you think you might be needing you might want to give him a call.

Now that it's getting to be top down time, I'll reinforce this thread. The offer in post #1 still stands until the supply is gone.

Tweetie, the hooks are also threaded. The set screw keeps the hooks from backing out.

Does anyone know where I can get the piece that the J hook screws into. I broke one and my local Ford dealer does not have a part # for it. They said I had to order the whole assembly which incorporates the handle and involves removing part of the soft top in order to install it. The assembly is over $400 and all I need is a $20 part.

Marc, I had the same problem. You have to buy the whole assembly (rod, mechanism and 2 black hooks (not chrome as original in '02) with holders. Will be working on mine in a month when had top put away for the summer. BTW, I think I only paid $180.00 for mine at the local dealership. (Bought it last fall).
I approached a tool and die maker to make me 2 holders out of aluminum. He said he could do it for about $80.00, but, after a month of screwing me around with promises of next week etc., I picked up the broken holder and went with the complete assembly from Ford. You may have better luck than I did with a t&d maker.
The holder can be mounted into the existing slot with the small swivel rod repositioned and the spring re-aligned. Good luck.

Marc, email Pat Kelly at Team Ford Lincoln Mercury in Las Vegas. Let him know what you are looking for and that you are a TBN member. He will do his best to help

Thanks for the information guys. I thought I was alone with this issue since I haven't seen it discussed in a thread yet. Parts quoted for my car by the local Ford dealer seem to be out of line; I'll try another source. Is the assembly replacement something that you can do yourself? It seems difficult. Let me know how it goes for you and what steps were required.
