It would be nice if those were selling prices, a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Leroy

P.S. as far as auctions go.....they get caught up in the compitition and pay way too much for most cars........

I think the bottom line is, these cars are a V-8 powered Roadster that is no longer produced and there will always be a market for them. AS time goes by the supply will dwindel and the values will increase, as they become harder to find. As with all classic cars the ones in the best condition will bring the highest dollar. Leroy

I am looking at buying a 2003 with hardtop and 28,000 miles. Price is listed at $21900. It is as close to perfect as you could find. I looked at Kelley and Edmunds and a bird in excellent shape s/b $18,000. NADA says $22,000 including $5,245 in mileage adjustment, Of course, most people selling are in the NADA range.

I went through Ebay motors and averaged 9 listings that actually sold(included all years). The year sold averaged 2002.9, mileage averaged 32448, and price sold averaged $17,116.

                    Any comments?

                      HI,

In my opinion, most ebay sales are probably at the low end of the price spectrum. Remember, these cars are available nationwide. If there is a car you want, and it is more than 500 miles away, what is the chance that you will drive over to look at it. And, if you don't look at it, will you bid on it. So, even if you wanted it, you didn't bid on it. If you did go and look at your favorite car, you might get sniped, and outbid at the last second. Then, how many more cars will you go to look at?

I received a letter earlier this week from my local Ford dealer wanting to buy my '02. The letter indicated that there are no Retro Birds available at auction anywhere in the state and there are customers asking for the car. This is the same dealer from whom I purchased my car new on January 1, 2002. He offered me $14,531 plus a mileage adjustment of 1,524. (I have 35,750 on the clock). Of course I have no interest in selling, at any price. Still, it shows that there is a consistent market for these cars which bodes well for future value.

I saw one Mecum auction in 2010 that sold a 2003. It was for $17350. No info on shape or mileage that I could see. Are there any other readily available sources of sales prices? If not I will be hard pressed to pay $22 without hard evidence.

According to Kelley blue book that's high by approx $2500 but low by $2000 per NADA. I'm all for profit but if your dealer pays you $15 and sells for $22 that's an obscene profit. If he sells for $18-$19 I'm fine with that.
I guess my point is that if a dealer expects to sell one for $22 then the offer to you should be higher. I believe they are realistically expecting to sell for $18-$19,that's why their offer to you was that low.

KBB is useless in determining values. Dealers used it on webisites to provide a sorce that makes them look good. Retail values are really high and trade values tend to be really low so the dealer comes out looking good.

NADA is used, but its not like it used to be. Most dealers have switched to using Manheim Market Report (MMR). Its a average and listing of cars that Manheim auctions have sold so its more up to date than the other books. It also lists each car so you can see color variance (red Mustangs for example bring about $700 more than white ones) and condition listings.

For this case MMR doesn't have a huge number of sales due to the rarity of the bird. They did sell a Red average condition 36,202 miles at Lafaytte for $15,800. With this small sample, its harder to trust the numbers. Our dealership Uses NADA loan and MMR and experience to come up with a wholesale number.

After all that, I can tell you the letter was sent to owners of a huge block of cars to try to generate business. Many dealers are doing this regularly as if you sell them the car they get it at less than wholesale or below so they win, and many will buy another car soon after selling one so the dealer can win again. We don't do it but we get companies wanting to send out letters like this (and many others). They continually call wanting us to buy these direct mail pieces.
