  • Hard Top Question

I'm currently looking around for a hardtop, no real hurry just watching E-Bay and Craig's list. Just curious is the headroom less, more or the same with the hardtop on? If it was less than the ragtop I'd more than likely knock what little brains I got left out in the street and then I'd have to go into politics to earn a living

A lot depends on your height.

I'm a bit over 5'10", and I have no problems with either top.

Art, there's a bit more room with the hardtop. I'm 6'1" and have a bit of room to spare with the hardtop. Top down, lots of headroom, so I prefer it.

Art, there is a black hardtop advertised in today's Orlando Sentinel for $1500.

Art, If your car wasn't ordered with the hard top and you've never had one on, you might be in the same situation I was in. I bought my car used and the first owner didn't want the hard top. The first time a top was ever on my car was during a hard top relay. It was a White top and I couldn't wait to get it off, I felt like I was driving a police car. I finally found a top for a good price on Craigslist and I had to drive about 500 miles to get it. It was MSG and had some damage and didn't come with the stand or the tool and cover, but the price was right, $400.00. It was in a storage shed that the owner had got behind on the rent on, so they cut the lock and sold everything. I put the top on my car and used a torx size 40 tool to tighten the two screws in front. At first I figured when I got it home the first thing I would do is buy the couple of pieces of molding that were missing and have it painted Black to match my car, but that never happened. Everyone told me to leave it MSG an it's still that way and I get lots of complements about it. I call it my NM clone. Good Luck. Leroy

            Re: Hard Top Question

My husband is 6'4" tall and has no problems driving my baby with either top. Of course, he prefers driving topless.

I don't think he'd admit a space problem anyway - we love the car, even after 8 years.

Thanks Ski that's the answer I was looking for. And Leroy I think I would agree on the cop car look. Although I think red on black would be pretty sharp too. To each their own. But didn't Henry say " THOU SHALL HAVE BLACK" . And I'm a little fat feller 5'11" but I drove my Suburbans the last 15 years or so so I'm use to stepping out so my joints need retraining! Man what a midlife change go from 8 passenger to a 2 overnight. Love it!

                  Re: Hard Top Question

Art - Ski is correct. I'm 6'4" and I would sure enjoy having another inch or two of clearance with either top on/up, but I just slide the seat forward a bit, lean it back a bit and it works for me. One trick I've learned is to be sure you don't have the seatback resting against the back shelf. It makes for a too stiff ride by not letting the seat flex. You can lean it back, just don't let it hit the shelf. Jay

So, what percentage of the cars came with the hardtop originally?

                      Re: Hard Top Question

I think quickdraw had come up with about 90% came with the hardtop. Ford was going for 85%.
I find it interesting that a good majority of the tbirds I see for sale seem to have no hardtop.

I think owners now believe they can get more selling the top seperatly than including it with the car sale. Especially if it's a trade in, KBB only adds $600.00 to trade in value.

I believe you may get slightly more headroom with the hard top. Seat position also makes a difference. This has been my experience. 6' 2".

Well I got outbid it was sitting around $340 for days and I bid on it friday up to 500 and it stayed there till about an hr ago and somebody jumped in there at 1200 no stand and no cover. One went off yesterday had stand, cover and said it was mint. I don't think they even got the reserve which was 1199. We'll keep looking I don't like to get too much in to bidding wars you can sting yourself.

I'm 4'3" and both tops work fine for me...the pedals are a bit of a stretch though.
