We had those in York,Pa. I worked for WT Grants for a year while in my Senior year in high school. About the same thing.

I do. I was in HS in 57 and have personally enjoyed one of those 39 cents banana splits on the few occasions that I could get mom to pay for one of those expensive luxury items. In those days, life on a farm in Arkansas was very bare bones.

The one were I lived had a Barber Shop and the hair cuts looked like someone put a bowl on your head and buzzed around it. Leroy

I remember the one in downtown Atlanta. We passed it on the way to Rich's to buy school and Easter clothes. I also remember Grants.

I remember Woolworth's quite well. We called it the 'dime store' back in the 50's up in n.e. Ohio. Charley remembers it for other reasons in Norfolk, Va...http://hamptonroads.com/2010/02/lunc...50-years-later

Ok, I don't remember Woolworth's from 1957, it was later after I actually became a little person. My memories are probably from 10 yrs later or so.

Elle, I've been on Granby St in Norfolk. I remember from my first trip up to see my boy off on his first deployment.

Also, we always called them a "dime" store.

We called them a "five and dime" in Reading PA. I remember the one on 5th and Penn. Made hot dogs with grilled buns.

The huge ice cream sandwich for either .15 or.19 cents.
A thick slice of Neapolitan ice cream between two rectangular sugar wafers.

Also in the center of the store they had a donut counter that sold only one type of donut.
A crescent shaped fried cake with an orange flavored glaze that they sold at half price starting 15 minutes before the store closed at 9 PM.

We had S. H. Kress and McClellans 5 & 10-cent stores side by side until the early 1970's. There may have been a Woolworth that closed down before I was born but I am unsure.
