  • Renewing Plates in Indiana

The last day to renew my plates was yesterday June 14, so I go to the BMV and they're closed. It says on the renewal slip for each viehcle there is a $5.00 late fee so I know I'm going to have to pay an extra $20.00 to renew my 4 plates on top of the $557.20. So I'm there at 8:00am today and they don't open till 8:30 and there are 20 people ahead of me. When I get up there the girl looks at my paper work and tells me my o4 GMC and my 04 TBird have to be emission tested, my 08 Malibu isn't due and my 48 Willys is exempt. So I go across town to the State Emissions Center and get in line there and get my GMC tested then I drive back home and get the TBird and go back and get it tested. Then it's back across town to the BMV and get in line again with about 20 ahead of me. After about 30 minutes in line a girl calls me to her desk and I give her my paper work and everything is in order and goes through without a hitch. I just happened to mention to her that I had been there yesterday but they were closed, and she was able to wave the late fees for me. So at last I got everything done. I'm glad this is only once a year. Leroy

So why didn't you start earlier on the renewal process? You could see by the plates expiration they were due to expire? You more than likely got notice from the state of renewal probably 1 to 2 months in advance. And you should know emission is due every how many years in your state.

30+ years of working in government and listening to these whines and then try and somehow blame it back on the agency. I have no sympathy!!

PS its Indiana but guess you do not know what state you live in or on what planet for that fact.

Can you not buy the plate stickers for 2 years at a time like here in Ontario? We have an emission test every 2nd year, like it sounds like down there, so you must be able to buy your stickers for 2 years at a time as well...

Wow, is it just me or was Leroy somewhat complimentary of the agency when he said the lady was able to waive his late fees? I don't see that he's trying to blame anything on the BMV. Oh, and I guess government employees NEVER make typographical errors. Kudos for being so awesome, Gator.

The emissions thing is always changing as well as the date when your plate expires. They used to go by the first letter of your last name. Last year my renwal date was May 1st. And they used to send you a form that you took to the Emissions Center that they filled out and then you took that to the BMV, but now there's just a small message at the bottom of he renewal that says" Emission Test Due ". I didn't see it and didn't realize it had been 2 years since the last test. And oh yea! I got the renewell slips in the mail 6 or 8 weeks ago, but why should I pay them early? You know they used to stick a tube on a hose up your exhaust pipe and have you hold your engine RPMs at 2000 for a minute and get a emissions reading. Now they look at your gas cap and with a mirror on a stick look under the car for a Cat-Converter. Then look to see if you have a ( Check Engine Light ) on your dash with the engine off then again with the engine on. Then they plug into your computer and get a reading while the car is running. I took my Sister's car in to get tested for her once, it failed when they couldn't get a reading from the plug, it cost $15.00 for an 2 week extention to allow time to get it fixed. I had to take it to a VW dealer to get it fixed, $75.00 for blown fuse. Took it back and it passed, they never tested the exhuast. I think it's all a State Scam, there's so much pollution in this area from the Steel Mills and Refineries that goes unchecked it's not funny. And we're one of about 4 countys in the whole State that have emission tests, the rest don't. Yea! I'm a WHINNER. Leroy

They still use a tube on a hose up your exhaust pipe and rev your engine RPMs at 2000 for a minute and get a emissions reading here, at least the last time they done the emission test on my car...

I have read that this is outdated and they can check by the engine light nowadays with the new cars, as they will only run for so many miles with the light on before the car won't run at all. Then, you have to get it serviced...

When I was in California in the Spring, I seen that they don't even call it emissions test... They call it like it is...

Only 20 people and only 30 minutes? That would be nice ... I just renewed mine at our KS county office and (as usual) there was a 2 1/2 hour wait! They do have a system where you can enter your cellphone number and get a text message when you are about 20 minutes from the front of the line. This allows you to leave and do other things; you can also check your status "in line" via txt msg.

You can renew anytime in the month of expiration and you can also renew by mail (our usual choice, so no wait) but this year got personalized plates for the bird and had to get them in person. Also, KS only requires vehicle check when purchased from out of state source - no other repetitive checks.

We can get two year stickers but there is no refund if you sell or wreck your car so why risk it.
I can renew on-line and have the stickers mailed.
I have done this for several years.
Two weeks ago my granddaughter said to me "Papa your plates are expired", I told her they don't expire till Jan and she says they expired 01/10 and I told her no it's 01/11. She takes me by the hand out to my truck and said "SEE". Dang if she wasn't right. Seems I renewed in Jan but either never received or misplaced the stickers. I have been driving for 6 months and never got stopped in any of the 3 vehicles. I check my saved email and find the confirmation number and had to order replacement stickers 3 @$5.50 ea.

I guess we have it easy here in Minnesota.
Tabs can be renewed online every year.
They're only $99 plus fees once the vehicle is 3 years old.
After 7 years, you get new plates (extra couple of bucks).
There once was a "smog check", but only for the metro (twin cities)
counties. I'm about 500 feet out of those counties so I never
had to do it. I heard it was a real pain and a long wait.
                      Good Luck!

In California the first 3 years are exempt from smog check. After that it is every two years. There is a standard fee, even though there are many places to do it. The data is sent to the DMV directly by computer (internet). You can get your sticker renewed by using the internet as well using your credit card. When they send you the notice it will say whether you need a smog check or not. A little bit of computer work and you are done if no smog. A trip to the checker (about an hour if they are not busy) if a smog check is needed. After a week or so, the new sticker and registration card comes in the mail and you are set for another year.

Move to Oklahoma - we gave up inspections several years ago. Just added the fee to the annual registration fee.

The inspections were a joke (if you knew the right place to go - they just changed out the sticker) and the stations didn't make enough money off of them to justify their time.

One of the really great things about it is that we don't have a tacky inspection sticker stuck to the windshield.
