  • Oil Change

Today under Extended Warranty Info by Sandman Leroy makes reference
to a oil change. Leroy states that the Ford dealer charged him for seven
quarts of oil where the manual calls for six with filter. I change my own oil and
filter easy job and I get to see whats going on under the car. With six quarts
the level came up to the top of the XXXX marks on the dip stick. There are
two small holes above and below the XXXX marks on the dip stick should the
oil level when full come to the top hole thus requiring more than six quarts?

No matter if it's an 02 or above the 6 qt. is all you need with a filter change. The 03 and above take a bit more but. Seven is too much.

Maybe if it's any amount over 6, they have to round off to the next quart? Leroy

I change my oil and filter at 4000 miles (rather than 5000 as recommended) I only use FMC oil and filters, and write the millage on the filter box top to show that the oil was changes within the distance requirements... my 6 year extended warranty runs out in September... 6 quarts

My 04 calls for 6.5 quarts. I always change my own and it takes 6.5. Not, sure what an 02 takes, but if dealer thought it was 6.5, then you probably got charged for 7. You could always asked for the extra half to go, and most reputable dealers would give it to you.

Jim, You can record your oil changes and any other service at this Ford site. Any service or repair at a dealer is also recorded. From time to time they also offer specials on Batteries, etc. Lots of good information, including an online owners manual. www.flmowner.com

Per 2004 manual takes 6.5QTS so they will charge for seven.
Per 2004 manual any where between holes is acceptable.
So to bottom hole should be 6 QTS top hole 6.5 QTS

Yep I am registered there .... free car contest going on as well.... check in and spin the wheels to see if you win something.... I like to have the oil filter box tops to give to the dealer (or buyer) when I trade off a car... kinda shows I have kept the car up...

If I remember correctly it was in 03 when an oil cooler was added. That's the reason for 02's using 6 and 03's and above using 6 1/2.

Bingo. You got it added oil cooler in 2003 thus the extra half quart. I can
sleep easy now. Checked 02 and 03 manuals no cooler in the 02 but strange
contraption called oil cooler between oil filter and oil filter adapter in the 03.
