Well folks yesterday I took the plunge into the world of a rotary buffer, I broke down and bought a Makita 9227C -> http://www.makita.com/en-us/Modules/Tools/ToolDetails.aspx?ID=350. Been using a 7424 for 7 years now so I’m thinking I’m ready to take the leap up. How much does it cost to get a Thunderbird painted? Gonna start slow, probably mess with my F250 a little to get the feel of the thing before I hit the birds. I also plan on using the foam polishing pads rather than the wool or foam cutting pads or the wool polishing pads.

Re: Makita 9227C
Welcome to the rotary club.
Start out slow and use the least agressive cleaner that will get the job done.
Here's a good video on how to pick up a bead without spraying it all over the place.

Re: Makita 9227C
$6,000 a tub wax? And I thought the P21 was expensive. It’s interesting that he applies it with his hands. Lasts for 6 months? Crazy stuff. What I also find interesting is that he’s using the buffer I just bought. I did a little R&D on them, not as much as I usually do.
I've watched probably 10 - 15 YouTube videos of people trying to burn through the clear coat; all of them seemed to struggle to try and make it happen which makes me feel a little more comfortable. Will still be very careful. Due to the weather yesterday I didn't get to the truck. Will be out there in an hour or so.

Re: Makita 9227C
Well the truck is done - whew. I can say that using a rotary is a bit more work than using an orbital. It does get the swirls out - actually used a combo - did the heavy lifting with the Makita and then went over the truck again with the DA and then used the DA to apply the wax - I use a liquid wax on the truck. Couple fopahs - I hit the lip of my cap with the backing pad - took the paint right off but for the most part I think its bird time. I think it definitely does a better job of getting major flaws out but seems to leave more swirl marks behind – now keep in mind my goal is to remove everything so my nose is against the paint trying to get the “right” angle to see the marks

Are you going to put the rotary to the NM? My 02 black does show swirl marks under certain lighting conditions enough to bug me. used a orbital to apply wax and buff out by hand but all the cars were
light colors. I did wax my T Bird using Mothers Carnauba Cleaner wax
entirely by hand results were good. Can a orbital be used to remove swirl
marks no way I would touch a rotary except to remove rust from one inch
plate. You sound like a fuss pot so any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Makita 9227C
I use a finishing compound like 3-M finesse-it or Wizards finish- cut no swirls with a FOAM WAFFLE pad. Most swirls are from wool pads or flat foam pads with an aggressive rubbing compound, which is the first step in buffing. Most stop there if it is a light color car .Darker colors show the swirls alot more . The waffle foam pad with a white finishing polish wont burn the paint. Follow up with a good wax.

Re: Makita 9227C
I did get a lot of the swirls out with my DA - I used Meguires #82 and a polishing pad. I have some deeper scratches in the NM and it being black I wanted to see if I can get them out. So my plan is to use Meguires #4 and the rotary with a light foam cutting pad.

Yes, very hard to burn through, butOriginally posted by Chuck View PostHaving just entered the world of a circular buffer, using it on my F250 and watching probably 10 - 15 videos on YouTube I've learned that its pretty difficult to burn through the clear coat.
it is very easy to put NEW marks into the finish (including buffer produced holograms) while you are trying to remove the original defects.

Chuck, why don't you try ScratchX on the scratches first, and then repeat the process with #80 or #82Originally posted by Chuck View PostI did get a lot of the swirls out with my DA - I used Meguires #82 and a polishing pad.
