                Re: On the Road Again

WOW! These Guys are FAST! Only 2 days from OK City to Fresno!

Bill's Red T-Bird showed up here at 5:00 PM yesterday evening, after leaving Flagstaff that morning. He just called me about 1:00 PM PDT, to tell me that he just left Barstow headed west on State Route (SR) 58. He must have been flying low!

After a short meet & greet, we reviewed his proposed trip itinerary for the upcoming days. He wanted to go see Sequoia/King's Canyon National Parks, but that would require too much back-tracking to the southeast. So, Bill is on his way this morning to Yosemite, via SR 41 north out of Fresno. He will probably check out the Glacier Point Road view of Yosemite Valley, then drop down into Yosemite Valley and tour it. Then, he is headed out east on SR 120, the Tioga Pass Road, to US 395 at Lee Vining. From there, Bill will probably head north toward Lake Tahoe via US 395 and SR 89. He is thinking about taking SR 89 all the way to Lassen NP. After that, he wants to head over to the north coast to see the Redwood NP and go up the coast to Seattle.

After Kim got home from middle-school registration, we took Bill and his buddy, Woodrow, out to a local restaurant for dinner, using our Expedition. Then, we gave them a quick tour of the north Fresno area and Fresno State University area. Instead of going back to our house, we detoured to Kim's parents house for Brownies and Ice Cream. It was Kim's sister's birthday.
After we got home, I took a look at Bill's laptop to see why it was so operating so slow. He was almost out of hard disk space, so we deleted some files and cleaned out some things. The hard disk was 65% fragmented, which is kinda high. We ended up defragmenting the hard drive all night long. By this morning, it was down to 4% fragmented. Now, it's operating better.

They took off, after breakfast here, on their great adventure.
Sorry, no pics. They were too fast!

I'm jealous! What a fun trip!

                  Re: On the Road Again

Bill: If you get this in time, go to Lonepine -- it is where they shot many cowboy movies and TV shows. Also, drive up to Mt. Whitney. it's about 14000 ft and the view is fantastic!

Then up 395 somewhere around Lee Vining is the remains of the Japanese internment camp. It is on the left as you drive North on 395. Try not to miss it.

                  Happy trails!

                    Re: On the Road Again

                    David,

I don't think Bill will be going to Lone Pine. He's headed north from Lee Vining. Lone Pine is too far south of the Tioga Pass Road and Lee Vining.

Sorry, you can't drive to the top of Mt. Whitney, at 14000 ft. The road only goes up to Whitney Portal. Whitney Portal is located 9 miles west of Lone Pine, at an elevation of 7851 feet. Whitney Portal, as its name suggests, is the gateway to the hiking trail up to Mount Whitney.

Manzanar National Historic Site, the site of the former Japanese interment camp, is only a few miles north of Lone Pine, so Bill will probably not see that either.

                      Hey Bill,

Where are you? How far did you get on Thursday, from Fresno?
How was the trip through Yosemite and on to Tioga Pass?
Did you make it up to Lake Tahoe and beyond?

                      Inquiring minds want to know!

                        Re: On the Road Again

To all that wonder where we are!!!
As Jerry said we went to Yosemite on Thursday --it was a long day as we did not get out the east side of the park until about 7:30 PM, then had to find a place to stay.
Friday we drove up CA 395 to CA 89 and took 89 all the way to Chester, CA. If you like mountain roads with lots of curves, that is a great drive.
Today, we took 89 through Lassen Volcanic NP and then CA 44 and 299 to Arcada. That is where we are tonight.
Had a great visit with Kim and Jerry.
I will try to put sme pictures on in the next couple days.
We are going to Coos Bay, OR tomorrow.
Will try to keep you posted.

                          Re: On the Road Again

GREAT to hear from you, Bill!

I wondered if you would have enough time in Yosemite. You could easily spend a few days there and still not see everything worthwhile.

Where did you find a place to stay after Yosemite? Did you stay in Bridgeport?

Sounds like you had a fun drive on CA 89. I may have to try that some day too.

Did you see the historic Joss House in Weaverville?

Enjoy your drive along the Pacific Coast through Northern California,Oregon and Washington!

                          We need pics!

                            Re: On the Road Again

We arrived in Seattle this morning around 10:45 , met with Tim Rowand for lunch and then went to his house so I could see were we are going to leave 15AGAIN while we go to Alaska.
After leaving Tim's house I had the oil changed -- Thanks to Tim giving me a coupon, the oil change was free!!!.
We came up US 101 from Arcada CA to Aberdeen Washington, great coastal drive.
I am going to down load the camera tonight, so I will try to post some pictures.
Tommorrow is a day of rest--wash clothes, etc, then we fly to Alaska on the morning of the 19th.
