We sold our Bird a couple of years ago and my wife really misses it. We are thinking about buying another. She really likes the 2004 mint green color and we may have to go out of state to buy one. Checking with the California DMV if the vehicle is a 50 state vehicle there is no problem registering it. However if it's a 49 state car it could be. According to the DMV there is a sticker inside the engine compartment that says whether the car was built as a 49 or 50 state car. Does anyone know which one the 2004 T-Birds is?

Re: 49 or 50 state car?
As far as I know, the car was built as a 50 state car. Know nothing about a sticker in the engine compartment that might say that.. It should pass the state inspection as that is what most owners had to do when they brought their car in from out of state.
You might ask at a high volume Ford dealer what they do about Thunderbirds coming in from out of state that need to get the certification.Limited Edition databases for 007 msg..#26 , PCR sticky, and Cashmere msg.#64

Re: 49 or 50 state car?
California has very strict emission standards. They are more strict than the federal govt. requires. They were more expensive to manufacture. Some car companies made a 50 state car that was leagal in all 50 states and some made a 49 state car and then a seperate car that just met California more strict emmission standards. Here is what the California DMV has to say:

Re: 49 or 50 state car?
On a sticker under the hood of my 04:
"This vehicle conforms to US EPA regulations applicable to 2004 model year new IT2bin 9 passenger cars and to California regulations applicable to new LEV passenger Cars OBD II certified."
Sounds like it meets CA Low Emissions for 2004, which at that time were more than the rest of the states. BTW, they later found that the California Board used the wrong numbers and things weren't as bad as these bureaucrats said they were.....
