Thank you for telling us what you went thru that day, my eyes teared up reading your story.

I shortened it up a bit for fear of being negative. There was a lot going on and I experienced less than some and more than some. It is still with me; one of the reasons why I left my job in NYC (for Long Island) was because that day haunted me. Of course, you know I MISS MISS MISS the city and working there and looking to get back there very soon! Nothing like it! I am a city girl and worked there for about 25 years.

I am one of the lucky ones. My town lost over 80 people -- and trust me -- my town is SMALL!

There are three settings for listening..... Top down, Driver Only and Passenger. The top down setting compresses the signal somewhat and could be causing your problem. Check to see what setting you are using and change it to driver only.

SOUTHERN: the treble/bass did not seem to change today at all on the FM stations I listened to. Will give it a try with CDs next to be consistent. SO -- if your theory is right, it is the antenna that causes this?

If you push in the volume control button and hold it for a couple of seconds the speed control will come up. At least on my '02 Bird and '03 Navigator (Both have very similar radios.) that is what happens. When I accelerate it increases in volume. When I slow down it decreases.

There is a high probability that is what it is. About 90% of the radio is common to all inputs whether they be AM, FM CD, or even SAT.
The volume control circuit for instance doesn 't know what input has been selected.So if it was the culprit, it would happen on all of the inputs.

So we know now that the problem is on AM only.
That is basically 1 chip in theradio and the antenna.....and the antenna connection.
Can the Antenna be bad?
Sure.
The Antenna on the Bird is just a wire glued on the inside of the windshield.
You can feel it.
It is certainly possible that while cleaning the windshield, the wire was broken. (This happens to defroster wires all the time. They can be repaired) Or if the Rear view mirror was ever replaced, the wire could have been broken...or if the windshield was replaced, the connection may not have been made properly.....
And the connector going into the back of the radio could be loose....

But it could also be just what happens when the manufacturer cheaps out on the AM, and puts in a poor antenna, and a lot of them do.
I'll try listening to AM (UGH!) for a couple of days........OK, maybe just 1 day.......How much talk radio can I stand? I'm a conservative and Rush Limbaugh can make me sick within an hour......

This thread has taken a turn into something a little off the original topic. So I hope it won't offend when I say I have a different opinion on this one.

For me cruising in the T-Bird or sprinting the Vette are escapes from the everyday world that includes music when I'm not enjoying the purr of the borlas on the T-Bird or wail of the LS3 in the Chevy.

I fully appreciate 9/11/01 is one of those HORRIBLE moments where we all remember where we were and how we learned of it. Our view of the relatively "safe world" we believed we were living in was altered for-ever.

Still, while mindful of that............ until something happens that is so disruptive that the price of gasoline goes super-nova..... there is no chance I'd ever get to the point where driving a "fun car" will include talk radio.

Access to 24/7 cable news in the house is enough for me. No need or desire what-so-ever to ruin the experience I enjoy while in the car.
As a society we are inundated with political rhetoric and opinion.

My car is one place where I have the ability to tune it all out for a little while.

It makes her feel safe, protected, informed, and if I had her memories, well there's no telling what I would do...probably be driving a first generation Hummer with some type of automatic weapon hidden in the trunk...and yes, fortunately/unfortunately I do have the means and know the people that could make this happen

Why does this happen?
Get back on the topic of the radio problems. The author of this thread could very well have a radio antenna problem which some one on TBN might be able to assist getting repaired or at least a decent answer for the why of their problem.

No need to apologize to me. You didn't do it alone.

The INTERNET throws together people of all types from all over the country. We all have different temperaments and the type written word sometimes leaves so much room for interpretation.

I guess this is my own kinda lame way of issuing both an acceptance of responsibility and an apology for my part in it.

If you blew your speakers twice as you say you did, I suggest you google "tinnitus", and make some adjustments in your volume level.

I got tinnitus and went from 209 lbs to 173 before my mind just accepted it as a fact of life and I went back to some stage of normal. But, it took about 18 months to reach that point, and I'm still not back to the way I used to be.

Now, I've posted on this subject before, and some may think "oh, here jerrym3 goes again, blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada", but I just wish someone had lectured me before it was too late.

I didn't know there were different settings for the radio. I'll have to check that out next spring. (it's put away until the salt is cleaned up).
The am volume and tone will vary, and that's with the cruise control on so it's not a slow down/speed up or top down/up type of thing. And, it only happens with am. fm and cd's are just fine.

The only time I listen to am is when the Twins are on and I'm in the car.
I sure wish they would broadcast the games on an fm station.

If by chance, you have the owners manual, it explains fully what all the radio settings do, and in detail, and how to call up all those settings. If not, having the manual that is, I would get one. There is a ton of information in that manual about every feature the T-Bird has in it, and how to operate it.

I appreciate you bringing this to my attention...I had a hearing test in '08 and I was fine.

I listen to all types of music...loud and with much bass. I think it was a combination of the Black Eyed Peas, PussyCat Dolls, Nelly and a couple others, that did my speakers in.
