when I turn the steering wheel I am hearing a rubbing noise it is more aggrivating then anything else. Has anyone else had this problem? It sounds like it is coming from the top part of the steering column.

I have a little squeal that sounds like rubber on plastic. Sounds like it is inside the car. I have ignored it. Maybe someday I will go looking for it with a can of silicone spray......

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH SILICONE SPRAY, THERE IS A TSB THAT REMOVES THE POWER STEERING FLUID AND REPLACES AND ADDS A FORD PART ADDITIVE. WORKS SOMETIMES AND SOMETIMES IT DOES NOT. NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO TELL ME WHAT IT IS AND IF IT IS HARMING ANYTHING.

            Re: steering

Try turning the steering wheel with the engine not running, if the noise is gone then it may need the fluid changed. If the noise is still there then it can't be the pump, since the engine is off, but it may be something in the column itself. A likely culprit is the clockspring. You may be able to chase it down with a mechanic's stethascope, pretty cheap at places like Harbor Freight.

The additive is a 4-ounce bottle of the rear axle additive Ford puts in their locking differentials. This stuff has been a real fix for Ford's power steering system moans and groans. It has cured a lot of pump and gear problems wthout any repairs.

Here is the Ford Article on this steering noise. It is most noticed at slow speeds such as turning into a parking slot.

If you still have a warranty and you have this condition, get it checked NOW! I had it and they ended up replacing my entire steering rack. I got it done within 100 miles of my warranty expiring.

                      Re: steering

it sounds like it is definatly in the steering column. It has nothing to do with the pump.

                        Re: steering

If you read the article linked in post #9, the second sentence clearly indicates that it may sound like it's coming from the column.

I would have bet money that my problem was in my steering column, however it was not.

                          Re: steering

Do read the article, the noise you hear is not coming from the steering column. It is coming from either the pump actually the incorrect oil type or the rack.
                          Get it fixed!
Or the next time you will be telling us how bad it is.

I didn't believe it either but the fluid change fixed it.
