  • Driving in the Fast Lane

I think it would be very interesting to relate some stories about our early days of driving. Most of us grew up in the era a big fast V8s. With so many young guys having access to really powerful cars I know that driving in the FAST LANE was part of our daily life.

Who wants to start it off? Who were the crazies in their younger days?

Actually... I am crazier now and still drive at about the same speed (except in my home town). I really enjoy the punch of a V-8!

Does 110 MPH in a GTO with crappy brakes count?

Most of the crazy things I did didn't have to do with speed. They had a lot more to do with the opposite sex. But I think that would be a XXX thread and wouldn't work on TBN. There was this one time driving down rt 83 at 70 mph but again, that would be XXX.

Re: Driving in the Fast Lane

About 2 months after I turned 17 I was driving home from college (I was a brainiac who went to college at 16 - then I discovered beer!) to surprise my Dad for his birthday and got a speeding ticket going 100 in a 55 in my trusty '86 T-Bird. The Trooper walked up to my window and said, "Are you tired of living?" About 4 months later I got not one, but two, tickets on the same trip to Daytona Beach (one in McMinn County, TN, and one in Lowndes County, GA). It was an expensive year. I've probably only had 3 tickets since then (I'm 32 now).

I ain't gunna go there! I love speed.

It had to do with a Turbo charged car and being late for an appointment on a snowy day. Nuff said!

Drive it like you stole it !!!

Does doing 120 MPH at night down a straight 2-lane country road in my '57 Ford Fairlane 500 Hardtop (w/ 312 ci 4-bbl T-Bird V8 ), with my little brother in the passenger seat count? He still remembers it to this day.

I have no idea how I survived my youth! LOL!

This photo shows one just like my '57 Ford Fairlane 500:

As for speed only. The second week we took delivery of our 02 my brother and I drove down the Rt.30 bypass and opened it up. Hit 143mph and backed down, there was a town ahead.

Re: Driving in the Fast Lane

It was the summer of 1957 and the gang all gathered at a place called Sherkston Quarry in southern Ontario for an afternoon of swimming and picnicking. I was driving a '56 Oldsmobile Super 88 Hardtop (like the one here) that belonged to a lady I did yard work for. My car was in the shop and she took pity on me and let me use her Olds that day.

One of my buddies was driving a '38 Buick Special Coupe with the straight eight and factory triple carb manifold. He had also installed glasspacks and milled the head to jump the compression ratio substantially. (unfortunately the only photo I have of this car is the one here).

We pulled out of the Quarry and headed south down highway six toward Hamilton around 6 pm on this warm Saturday evening. His Buick was in the lead until I passed him at about 8o mph. He, in turn passed me at about 95 mph. Not to be outdone, I caught and passed him at about 105 mph. The next pass attempt was more interesting because I kept the Olds at about 110 with him beside me. We continued side by side down this two lane highway running between 110-115 for some time before I realized the young lady who was my date was screaming her lungs out and threatening to open the door.

We both backed off to about 75 just as we came around a bend to spot an Ontario Provincial Police cruiser up ahead on the right. My buddy ducked in behind me as we sedately cruised by the officer at about 60.

My date didn't say another word all the way home and never returned my phone calls later.

Rick, that picture of the Olds was taken at King Cruise in NL.
Have taken a shot of that exact same car July last year.

You just have to love Rick's opening line "It was the summer of 1957". Now I are an
old fart and drive like one.Back then different story loved speed by late 1958 lost my
license for speeding. Joined the Army got to speed around in Jeeps,Deuce and a half
and my favorite a five ton Reo. Scariest moment fading drum brakes can anyone relate to that. Rick love that Buick I had a 1940 La Salle opera coupe man could that
thing haul would have blown away the Buick.

Frits... I couldn't find a pic of the Olds in my files that was the color of the one I borrowed that year, so I stole the one you posted from last July.

Re: Driving in the Fast Lane

The T-Bird was my first V-8 [except for the Town Car, does that really count?], so I have no V-8 stories I can regale you with. The car that I had the most fun with was a 77 Datsun 280z with 5-speed tranny. It had 180 hp straight six. I drove fast and crazy, spun it a few times on dry pavement, let's just say I was luckier than I was stupid. I didn't get my first speeding ticket until after I had been driving for 29 years. I was one lucky SOB.

Gobird, my XXX drive was on I-95 somewhere between Richmond and DC many moons ago...

Spence, I'm with you on this one. The cars weren't really all that memorable (maybe because my parents had such crappy ones and I did not have my own until I was out of HS), but I did have several great girl-friends.

You would be surprised what you can do in a 1961 VW Bug if your determined.
