  • TBird Restoration on TV

Thanks to Skip who gave me a heads up, tonight on the Discovery Channel at 10 p.m. a 1965 Thunderbird restoration project. Since my sone is doing some work on mt '65 I alerted him as well.

This has nothing to do with the show but my wife is in the process of making me a Thunderbird quilt with appliques of a 02 (EB) and 65 (Vintage Burgandy). She's made great progress this week. I cannot wait until it is done, it's darn cold here.

Me too Vickie. I biased 'cause I own one. The kicker was the line about the 'last two seater'. Guy must not know about retro birds.

It's 25 miles due South of Cleveland, Ohio on I-71 at OH 303.
About 20 minutes from my house.

I think so Gene but, like I said, I am biased. They did shoot a scene at TBird Connections which sells reproduction and NOS parts for older birds.

Yeah - I caught that as well. Although we did get included in the tag line about 11 production models from 1955 - 2005.

I thought it was a good show and I liked how they went to Sedona to discuss the jewelry and they talked about the significance of the thunderbird in Indian culture.

A couple things I didn't like - the son bugged the heck out of me. And the paint job, even after they cleaned it up looked like crap. Bad/good things about big HD TVs is that you can see everything. Good job on the interior though. Don't know anything about prices, but it seemed like the Tbird should have gone for more. I don't think I would have sold it in a rushed junk yard auction.

The 2 week rush was unnecessary and staged for the show, IMO. If they had given the marketing some some I think they could have got $8-9K for it. Again, JMO.

It's being rebroadcast Sunday, Jan 30, 1pm (EST I think). I may DVR this one while on the Pappasitos-Ft. Worth trek.

The "donor" car looks like my first '65. I bought it with plans to restore it. Exterior a mess, but interior pretty good. I eventually bought a '65 driver that cost me less than it would to get the first one to the same condition. Sold both before I bought the '02, but they still pique my interest. Just need a place to keep another car.

Good program in many ways, but too much talk, and not enough nuts and bolts on the restoration process. As was mentioned earlier, the interior and a few other items looked good, but paint appeared poor. The process being so rushed, I wonder about the quality of overall restoration. May not have been worth a whole lot more than what it brought.
