  • Shift Knob Inoperative

Has anybody ever had a problem pushing in the release knob on the transmission shifter knob to shift from PARK to any other gear?? Mine stuck today and it took a good deal of moving and pulling to get it to be "squeezable" and move the car out of PARK. Didn't do it the rest of the day but now am concerned. Any thoughts?

Were you parked on a slope with your brake off. Sounds like a common problem coming out of Park ... independent of Thunderbirds.

Was it parked on a slight downhill incline? Was your foot on the brake?

        Re: Shift Knob Inoperative

I was parked on a level surface and did put my foot on the brake as usual to shift from PARK to another gear. Strange, eh?

If it happens again put the key in the run position (don't start the Bird) and it should come out of park.Put it in netural and start. The netural saftey switch maybe going.

It's the brake light switch, here's one thread on it:

Please bear in mind that you may not have brake lights even if you do start in neutral, so this needs to be attended to.

                Re: Shift Knob Inoperative

It has happened to us once in December 2010. I got the same response of "put your foot on the brake before trying to start.
                WOW never thought of that!
                It has worked fine since.
Twice though the 2011 Lincoln MKS pushbutton start did not work. Now that might be my fault as I may have hit the button before applying the brake.
I'm keeping an eye on that one.
