  • Spreading it's wings

Got a chance to drive the bird at Talladega Superspeedway recently for a "Fan Appreciation Day."

We pretty much had the track to ourselves, so we would let the others get way ahead of us so we could make some pretty good runs. Here's a video of one of them.

    Hope y'all enjoy!

Nice, what speed did you get up to. Have done this twice on Bristol and got up to 80/85 mph.

We saw 130mph a few times. Really wasn't paying that much attention to it though, for obvious reasons. LOL!

Nice job! I'm impressed you did it with the top down. What was the type, age and mileage of the tires?
Were they the originals on the car?

1- I am amazed that you got it up to the wall at Talladega.

2- They let you run without a Helmet?

          3- COOL clip!

What an experience...I would like the chance to do that if at all possible. I'm not far away when and if you get the chance again..

Cool video you got there. I gotten mine up to 140mph before i ran out road to drive on. Its hard to find a place down here that has a long straight away. I would have tried to go higher but i had old tires on and i soon had to brake or else go from paved to dirt road. I'm sure that would not ended well.

                  That looks like fun.

How much more speed was left under the hood?

I don't know from experience but CAMOUDE said he got his to 140MPH, and I think a few other people have been in that range. They might even make 145MPH. I don't think Ford would have gone to the expense of placing "V" speed rated tires as original equipment on the Tbird if they would not do that much.

And he did this run with the top down! Talk about 'the wind in your hair.'

                          Re: Spreading it's wings

Glad y'all enjoyed the clip. I've got a few more, but they would be better if edited a little. Wife wasn't as steady holding the camera as I was...

To answer some of the questions.

Our car has newer Kuhmo tires on it. I really hate them, but they had plenty of grip for what we were doing.

To get the chance to drive at Talladega you must be ticket holders. This was one of the "rain dates" from when the actual event got rained out back in September. It's the second time I've got to do it. Last time, we took our Mark VIII and hit about 120. Vid is on my account, but does have some colorful language from my friend in the back seat. To the locals: They have another date of March 12th. Call the ticket office and see if you buy tickets, they will give the voucher. We'll be there the 12th running my mothers Corvette.

Sometimes, they will give you a track drive voucher if you buy tickets the day of the track drive.

Did the car have more in it? Been considering that. If I get to do it again, I want to leave it in 4th to get a bit more RPM's. I'd say you'd need two full laps without catching the "pace car" to hit 140. If I was going to do that, I think I'd like to have the hard top on though. The wind was a little rough.

Wonder if Daytona has it too. At The RPM Isaw I would guess there may have been a little more left if electronis didn't get in the way. I have heard that there is a limiter at 140. I sure would like to do it. haven't been in a race car in over 40 years.
