    Re: Oil Change

I have one of those magnetic drain plugs, I haven't installed it yet. Got it in the fall after I put the car away for the winter. Only a month & a few weeks away until the 2011 unveiling, I'll change the oil and put the magnetic plug in. So I won’t know if it did anything until this time in 2012. Having the car in a bag I don't remember off the top of my head where exactly the drain plug is but I don't believe it's in the back of the pan.

        Re: Oil Change

As long as we're discussing oil changes, if someone has a car that isn't a daily driver, but one that gets driven say 20 miles once a week, how often would you change the oil? I know I don't put close to 3000 miles on my car in a given year. Would you change it every 6 months, or would yearly be fine?

With that yearly mileage I would go with once a year.

            Re: Oil Change

One of the reasons the car can go so long on an oil change is fuel injection. Just the right amount of fuel at the right time so no fuel washes past the piston rings into the oil. Have an 88 Ranger with a carb 3000 on an oil change is it, oil is just black. Fuel injection is just a cleaner system.

              Re: Oil Change

I put about 500 - 700 on mine a year, I go once a year - in the spring when I take them out of storage. Some will debate in the fall before you put them away. For me, I don't start mine at all in the winter as they are in a bag and before I start them in the spring I change the oil. I guess it does not make much of a difference if the oil sits in the pan over the winter or in the bottle. My thought is more of the old oil drains into the pan the longer they sit. I use a fully synthetic oil.

One more thing for you do it yourselfers – one thing for sure your dealer or any 3rd party will not do and that is prime the oil filter. Since they go on horizontal you can fill them about ½ - ¾ of the way full. The filter needs to be filled before any oil flows to the engine.

the company that sells the magnetic drain plugs also sells a set of magnets (6) that you attach to the filter to help catch more of the junk that would attach to the drain plug and keep it out of the engine has anyone tried or have thoughts

                    Sounds like overkill to me.

Somebody has got it right. Mag-Plugs or Chip Detectors are installed on
engines as a means to let you know you have a problem. As on jet engines
they are checked after so many hours no chips you keep flying find chips
tear it down. Filters keep the oil clean not Mag-Plugs.

I've done this on every vehicle i've owned.I don't think it's a make or break deal for me but if i'm doing the work that's how it's done.My work vans get changed at the local speedie lube, just faster on the fly.

Would anyone know the oil filter number for a Napa Gold for my 2003? I don't know about the oil cooler if it has one or not- I thought they were all the same! Napa is having the filter sale this week! Gonna stock up. Thanks in advance...John
