How can I tell if I have a 427 in my car? What should I look for ?

You don't have a 427 unless someone put it in. Your car came with a 390, either 300 or 330 hp and Cruis-o-matic transmission. The standard engine was the 300 HP unit. Your serial number and/or plate on the firewall should tell you what it has. If you need help decyphering it, post the numbers and we'll get it for you.

I am confused by your question since the title says '64, but your posting picture shows a '66.
The only engines in the 64 & 65 was the 390.
The 66 had the two 390s available, show as a Z or 8 in the VIN. There was an optional 428 (not 427). It has a Q code on the VIN. I don't know where in the VIN sequence it is, though.

Unless of course you have a "Q" car. 5th didgit of your VIN. "Z" is the 390. "Q" is the 428.

He hasn't posted a photo of the one he's selling. His avatar is a 1966, as identified below avatar as a Black 1966. The one he wants to sell and is questioning the engine is a convertible, his avater is obviously a Town Coupe hardtop. I think maybe he has a typo in this threads title, his other thread states a 1966 convertible and he calls it a 1966 in his description of it as a convertible he isn;t restoring.

For the record, the engine code Q or Z is the 5th digit on the vin number.

I have three Tbirds. 66 convert.64 hardtop. and a 66 landau that is being restored. The avatar is what my 66 landau will look like when it is done. I am aware that the avatar is not a landau. Hopefully this will clear it up.

What are the odds that he has the car that was built for Jacques Passino, Fords' racing boss in the mid 60s? it was special built with a 427 and some custom tweaks, such as square headlights, if memory serves me right! alan
