  • T-bird as daily driver?

The 02 t-bird was on my short list of cars that I wanted to buy. Would this car make a good daily driver or will I end up paying for it on the backend? Basically the my youngest kid is off to college and the wife has the big suv, so we discussed getting a convertible for some weekend top down fun, but I would have to get rid of my small suv to do it. So what do
you guys think? Would it be bad timing with this economy and all, and would the t-bird make a ok daily driver?

Works for me. I drive my TBird daily and we use my wifes Lexus for most stuff that involves anything that will not fit in TBird.

All I can say is our 02 Bird was an everyday driver when we first got it back in 02. It was on the road as a full time driver for 3 to 4 years in Pa. It saw snow, sleet and rain. Never had a problem. It is now over 76,000 miles and still going strong. It still looks almost like it did when new.

          Re: T-bird as daily driver?

That's what I bought it for. And it is working out good so far.

I had the list down to Chrysler Sebring (terrible reliability) Volvo C70 (Nice, but a real performance dog), Miata (too small for the Interstate) BMW (too expensive for what you get), Mustang (how do you know which one is yours......)

Anyway, I bot mine with 32000 miles on it and it is running fine.
And none of the others have the sex appeal of the Bird.

The first question you need to answer is......
          2 passenger or 4?

A lot better car and even more exclusive, but doesn't have the Cachet the Thunderbird had. Adios, mi Amigo.

A Thunderbird has been my daily driver for the past 9 years. When I first bought it I had three kids all under the age of 5. All the neighbors thought it was crazy, but it's never been a problem, we already have one minivan, no need for 2.

I spend way too much time in a car to be driving something I don't love. Prior to the Tbird I normally had a "fun car" I drove in the summer and another car I drove in the winter, with the hardtop the Tbird covers all seasons.

Personally, I love my 2002 T Bird as a daily driver. Admittedly, I drive a 2005 GTO as well. Both great cars.

I bought mine last year and it is my daily driver with my wife's Taurus serving as grandma's taxi, grocery shopper, etc.

I've put almost 15K on it and have a smile on my face driving to and from work (Extra wide smile when the top is down).

                  Charles,
For over nine years my daily driver has been a retro bird. You can enjoy top down weather all year long in central Texas. Get one, you will like it.

                    Re: T-bird as daily driver?

Mine is a daily driver during the spring, summer, fall months. Here in Minnesota, the salt they use to de-ice the roads can eat a car quickly. I have a pickup for bad weather use and my wife drives the SUV.
The 'bird gets a lot of looks and comments.

As long as my wife and I have three cars, the retro will be a semi garage queen.

I think the main reason I like the "garage queen" status for the car is that every time I drive her, it's almost a new car experience.

If I were to drive her everyday, the car might become just another mode of transportation, but that's just my opinion.

As for having two retros, nope, not for me. One's sufficient, although having an LS and a retro is almost like having two, at least mechanically.

Wouldn't want two retros, two 1964 Galaxies, or two Lincoln LS's. I like the variety of driving something different depending on my mood, weather, circumstances, etc.

Just go for it. What do you want it for? Enjoy it as long as you can. Life is too short. Everybody on this forum will have a different opinion on this, that's about 7000. Be yourself. This car will grow on you. Everybody that has a 2002 to 2005 will agree with me. I hope.

Welcome to TBN. Your first good decision was joining TBN. You'll meet some great folks here. Your next good decision will be to buy the T-Bird. I've been a car guy my entire life. Nothing has ever compared. Driving this car always lifts my spirits.

My car is a garage princess (doesn't come out in bad weather, but isn't garaged all winter either). If it is dry out, it's time to take her out.
