  • "Bling Bird goes Plaid" - 2011 Mods Part 2

In my continuing series of mods, I was always wondering what could be done to the trunk area. Late last Fall, while perusing ebay, I noticed a beautiful '57 Aqua Bird for sale and it had a plaid trunk liner. The light colour of the pattern complemented the aqua colour so well. That's all it took to get my "mod mind" going.

I zipped over to my good friend upholsterer and discussed the vision of a plaid trunk liner for my TBird. He agreed that the pastel type finish of TBird Blue would work beautifully with a light plaid liner - and what could be more retro? Ideas flowed and he mentioned it would be wise to also continue the white theme of the interior into the trunk. He came up with the notion to make plaid inserts against white border material for the trunk lid. I then thought to get matching white coloured plastic spray paint for the panel which covers the back of the tail lights. I also used the paint for the plugs, and found an almond coloured plastic paint for the plugs in the plaid areas.

The plaid material is a 21F "large plaid" code which is used for Mustangs. It sure looks like the same plaid I have seen in some Baby Birds, as well as a '59 TBird I saw on ebay recently. It took some good internet surfing to find a supplier who sells it in large sheets and not pre-cut to fit a particular model. Where would we be without the internet?

The plan was finally put into action when all the necessary supplies were received about 3 weeks ago, and my upholsterer completed the work last night. We celebrated the job over a favourite beverage of ours, and I couldn't be happier. I must say that this is one of my most satisfying mods to date - it's just soooo retro, and in addition, the trunk is "brighter" and actually looks larger.

Now if it can stop raining sometime in the next "month", I can take BlingBird out for her Spring run.

    Here are some pics....

Excellent work, outstanding concept. Looks very bright and definitely retro. Ford should have hired you to design these Birds.

The material came from Stock Interiors (South Carolina) - very good to deal with and great shipping. My upholsterer wanted me to order the material with a fleece backing to ease the installation process (easier to adhere the material to the existing trunk lining)

Appreciate the feedback from everyone !

Ford should have done it that way. Looks nice and retro.

Mark, looks great. Where did you get the white or grey plastic trim - did you have the originals painted?
