  • COPS at 61K '05 BIRD

Over the last year I've had a very slow loss in engine performance - I would equate it to loosing about 1/16 of an inch of throttle movement every month, not nearly enough for a non-pro to notice. The only noticeable indication was a little variation in idle (tach searching) after coasting for a longer than usual distance. In April the engine began to occasionally misfire, infrequently, and barely enough roughness to notice. I thought this must be the dreaded COPS failure and began to be very careful with acceleration loads. The problem continued to escalate with a very obvious misfire when accelerating under load at about 40 mph. Acceleration when faster or slower did not produce a misfire. I made an appointment w/Ford service and on the way to the shop the misfiring got worse and the check engine light came on solid (first time.) My service rep said all of the COPS failed to pass the test and Ford would replace all 8 COPS and the associated wiring under warranty. I don't know what the total cost was, but the parts were $842. This treatment by Ford seems a bit different from what some of our members have experienced. The dealer is Covert Ford, Austin, TX. I expected the COPS problem would make a real garbage issue - I got roses!

For "more than you ever wanted to know" about COPS and problems that mimic bad COPS see this 05/03/11 TSB in "Auto Service Professional" [URL="http://www.autoserviceprofessional.com/article/91549/coil-over-plug-misfire"]

According to the list at the beginning of the article it does cover the '02's - "2002-2005 Thunderbird".
