If you're going to drive it you shouldn't pay much more for it than one with 5,000 miles on it.

I'm originally from Chicago and I totally agree with you. I like the Jay Leno idea drive 'em until they need to be restored, that's what cars are for. If you just want something to look at, buy a painting!

As I said before - WHAT A WASTE !

All 200 NM Edition Thunderbirds cost $41,995 each new in 2001. So we can assume that someone paid this amount 10 years ago plus say a conservative 5% tax ($44,000 rounded off). There has been some kind of storage cost to keep it in a climate controlled environment for all of these years - let's be extremely conservative and say $500 per year, so $5000 total (could easily have been double this). Even sitting there, it should have had some maintenance costs. Or does it have 10 year old oil and coolant in it? We'll go conservative and say $600 total. I'm sure there are other costs but we'll let those go for now.

$49,600 (conservative cost of ownership since new)
$30,600 (auction price)

$19,000 loss (plus the cost of the ebay fees and dollar depreciation over 10 years)
+
10 years of FUN, FUN, FUN lost forever

That was quite an investment strategy!!

They would have lost essentially the same amount of money if they had driven the car 5000 miles a year and enjoyed it.

What is the lesson here? For goodness sakes folks, DRIVE YOUR CARS !!! It is the only way to get your money's worth out of them. Ours will be travelling about 10,000 miles in the next couple of months. It would be great to see you out there enjoying the road along the way.

If I found the right one, i.e., the right combo of options and color to suit my liking, I'd be willing to pay MRSP for a zero mileage and properly stored 2003-05 Ford Thunderbird. Like 00Mustang said "what can you buy for 2011 dollars" in the tune of 41 grand?

I'm not so sure this car actually sold. The dealer still has it listed on Craigslist (ad was put up on 6/21). The price is $39878. I find it odd that it is at a Chevy dealer, as the owner also has a Ford store directly across the street.
