  • Brake Rotors and Ceramic Pads Brands

Please advise me on a brand for new rotors and brake pads front and rear on my 2003 bird.

History of pads, Organic (budget) is basically semimetalic, semimetalic is made with resin and steel (wire and so on) and then there are the newer ceramics and carbon ceramics pads.

History of rotors, OEM are smooth and not slotted or cross drilled and use semi metalic pads usually.

Semi metalic pads stop good but slowly grind your rotors and make a mess of your wheels from the dust and often squeal and heat up to the point of warping the rotors in repeated heavy stop and go traffic.

Ceramic pads and carbon ceramic pads are supposed to run cooler and dust less (They still dust just less and a gray color usually)

Newer slotted rotors improve braking over OEM type rotors and are supposed to be cooler running.

Newer slotted and drilled rotors run ever cooler than just slotted but are prone to cracking (at least in the early days of these type rotors)

Please recommend specific brands and combinations of rotors and pads that you have used on your bird.

I am a city driver and drive on the freeway in stop and go driving. Some people have brakes that last 40k to 50k miles while others only get 15k to 25k on their brakes. The cause of this varies but is mostly related to your driving habits and the type of driving you do. Some people in the city use both feet to brake and accelorate at the same time. This wears your brakes doubly over just using your right foot. You also get more heat and get glazing of the pads faster and more often than people that drive less aggressively.

Motoring on the highway or only in non stressful situations your brakes will last longer (like crusing). But for me it is freeway stop and go and I live in a hot climate (Houston, TX).

Any specific advise would be appreciated. I will order the parts over the internet and do in a few weeks.

Interesting Question and tuff decision. I have had many Fords for many years and had some bad experience with brakes. First of all Fords rotors don't seem to turn well, and warp afterwards so I quit turning rotors. Alot of ford brakes are noisy.after repair. I prefer a soft pad that won't wear the rotor so bad and change pads often with out turning rotors. Pads cheap by compairison. That being said my Expadition has 100K miles and original brakes truk has 94 with pads changed twice original rotors. Neither are driven under the condition you describe I think if I were to change rotors on any Ford I would use the slotted with a soft pad.

I also have a 2003 Red/Red and 2005 Cashmere. I installed rotors and pads on my 2003 and had it done on 2005. The toughest part I found was a special tool to turn the rear calipers in. I paid about 200 per vehicle for parts only Ceramic pads and cross drilled and slotted rotors F&R inc freight. Bought them off E bay from Ca.
Had the 2005 installed by Ford dealer and they said the rotors were not "up to Ford Standards" My experience with Ford rotors are that they wear quickly and can not be turned because of heat warping.
So far I am happy with Ceramic pads as they do not leave iron rust on wheels.
Just finished putting Ceramic pads on my Lincoln LT trucks and am very pleased. Brakes are a little soft at first, but will get better with some miles. No more grinding from metal pads.

Thanks for you advise. I found for $420.00 you can get new cross drilled and slotted rotors (4) and new ceramic pads in a kit from for all 4 wheels from www.brakewarehouse.com, they are stoptech and have good reviews. My present rotors look smooth and I may just buy pads. I cannot stand the black goo on my wheels from the present pads. I have the polished chrome wheels (Premium) and they look bad with just a little bit of dust. I found Akebono Ultra Premium Ceramic Disc Brake Pad at Advance Auto on line with a 25% discount code and they are 152.00 delivered to my home. The Akebono have good reviews from several places.

Thanks. I will update when I get the whole kit or the Ceramic Pads.

Since my rotors were in such good shape I decided to order the Akebono ceramic pads. I got them from Advanced Auto Parts for 152.00. They gave a 25% discount for on-line purchase. I took each wheel off during the brake pad replacement and cleaned the center of the wheel. There was an amazing amount of black gunk left by the semi-metalic pads. Since replacing the pads I have driven about 800 miles and you can barely see the dust. Before because of the black build up every little rain storm or water on the road, the wheels looked terrible. When the old dust got wet the centrificatal force caused it to get all over the chrome of the wheels.
