  • Thunderbird Status Change

The status of our 2004 Thunderbird has changed. We bought the car new in July of 2004 and it was Jeanette's daily driver since then. Drove it to the high school where we teach every day. Enjoyed it most on days when it was cold in the morning but she could put the top down in the afternoon.

Back in March, we went to the Richmond Auto Show with the Classic Thunderbird Club we belong to. Walked in just with the idea of seeing what was new. By the time we had been there 90 minutes, Jeanette said she would like to stop by the dealer on the way home. She took a test drive in two different models and by the time we got home, told me she would like a new car. Monday I looked and found 12 versions within a hour and a half drive of our home and by 4 that afternoon, the bidding war was over and a dealer in Charlottesville had made the best deal. Drove over on Wednesday and picked it up. Now her daily driver is a Subaru Forrester and the Thunderbird is well cared for and pampered on the right side of the garage. Not that the Thunderbird sits most of the time, just that it doesn't have to go to school every day.

She wanted a four door car so that we help transport her parents when needed, and something the puppies could see out the windows. The F150 and the Jeep just didn't cut it.

So how many other people are like us in that the Thunderbird started off as the daily driver and over time has moved over to the "fun" or "special time" car? Would like to know about the number.

Just the opposite here! It is the "special time/fun car" now, but will be the "everyday driver" when it gets older (when it replaces our oldest car).

Good luck with the new ride. BTW, I saw a Subaru Tribeca today that was being used as an unmarked police car.

Mine may go from fun car to daily driver when my 94 TBird bites the dust, because my wife and I will never agree on a replacement car.

I say used Explorer, she says Jaguar.

Whatever she's smokin', it's most likely illegal.

Mine was a daily driver for about the first four years up in Pa. in rain and snow. Bought a 2005 Ford 500 and took the Bird out of service as a daily driver. It now just goes to TBN events. The 500 is gone and replaced with a 2012 Focus Hatch.

Subaru Forester a reliable, practical, safe car - Especially in inclement weather - Nice choice~!

T Bird has always seen low mileage use around here.

Whew! Got nervous when I saw the title of the thread, Steve - thought you'd gotten rid of it. Glad to know it's being pampered, and we look forward to seeing you here at T@TWH in your gleaming Merlot on the 30th!

Sounds like your wife has great taste in automobiles to me.

                  Re: Thunderbird Status Change

I've only had the 02 blue for 3 months. First owner kept it as a garage queen so when I bought it there were only 5100 miles. It is my daily driver (only 3 miles to the office lol) and I love actually driving my Thunderbird daily. My ZR1 is the Garage Queen along with my 64 Corvette (owned since 1976) The 01 Honda Insight is for our long distance travel. At 63.5 lifetime mpg, its saved us a bunch at the pump.

Birdy is the fun car and the 2008 Taurus is the daily driver for me. I do drive Birdy more in the summer but this summer have granddaughter (6 yrs. old) here for the summer so we have to drive Taurus. She will be here till about Aug. 13th or so.

Car was a daily driver July 2002 - August 2010.
                      Car now a 103,000 miles-on-the-odometer garage queen.

Moved it out of the garage for a home inspection the other day and the windshield cracked from the heat. A closer inspection revealed a stone chip where it started. It came from on the road home from Texas in May. Real convenient, we're in the process of changing insurance companies right now. Sorry AARP Hartford, it's yours.

                          Re: Thunderbird Status Change

Tbird is still for good weather and tbn events. The other two suv's alternate between normal weather and bad road weather. I keep having to face the reality that the old explorer will go at some point, but keep holding on. As long as I have garage space and it doesnt cost much in repairs it's a keeper.

Bonnie's '05 T-bird was an early retirement gift. She drove it to work everyday for a year and then retired in '09. Since then it is our fun/weekend/topdown on a cool evening car.

Little Red has always been the 'fun' car for good weather only. Although while I was working I would take it on good days. Sure improved my attitude.

Replaced the Hemi Charger as the bad weather car in May with a new Buick Regal Turbo - much better on gas :-)
