Yes. They are made of lightweight aluminum. If you need to use it be sure everything is properly seated before final tightening and use. My SIL botched the job and elongated the holes for the lugs. I feel much better now that I have a real wheel and tire that will get me wherever I need to go.

There should not be is a problem with using the T 186 60 Spare with 235 55 Tires.
The difference in the sizes are not that great.
The T 186 60 17 temp tire have an OD of 25.74"
The 235 50 17 tires have a nominal OD of 26.25" - 102% of the size of the temporary spare
The 235 55 17 tires have a nominal OD of 27.18" - 106% of the size of the temp spare.
I don't think that extra 4% is going to damage an open differential. It might casue the ABS system to set an ABS problem code, but that will clear up once the correct tire is reinstalled.
Differentials are designed to handle variation in the speed of the rear tires much greater than 6%.
The actaul rolling radius of tires supossedly of the same size can vary by 1% or 2%.
When you go around a turn with a 100 foot radius, the difference in speed between the inside and outside tires is around 6%.
When you go around a turn with a 40 foot radius, the difference in speed between the inside and outside tires can be greater than 15%.
When you drive in low traction conditions the difference in speed between rear tires can be really great (one can be stopped, the other moving at the equivalent of a 100 mph or more).

Someone brought up this thread last week from the dead, and I ran across it as I was searching for an alternate spare tire other than Maxxis. I previously had tried 215-55-17 tire as a spare, but it was wider than the 180-60-17 spare so the cover was hitting the tire and wouldn't sit flat with the rest of the trunk. OP Taz said he bought a used 225-50-17 tire and the cover didn't touch it, so I went ahead and bought a new tire from Walmart to try out, if it doesn't work then I can always return it hassle free. I already knew the 215-55-17 didn't work for me, so I was thinking why the 225-50-17 would work since it's much wider than the 180-60-17 original spare. Well, I received the tire today and obviously IT WOULDN'T WORK WITHOUT THE COVER HITTING THE TIRE!!!
The 225-50-17 is at least 2-3 inches wider than the 180-60-17, so when it sits flat on its side, it is at least 2-3 inches higher and the cover will hit it. It will raise the cover at least 1" higher all around. On my way to Walmart to return this brand new tire. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING THE 225-50-17 AS A SPARE WITH THE HOPE OF THE COVER WILL NOT BE HITTING IT BECAUSE IT WILL NOT WORK. I ALREADY DID THE WORK FOR YOU!!!

Is putting a full size rim with standard tire in spare well that big of deal if you don't mind panel laying on tire and being an inch or so higher?
The total diameter of the tire and rim of spare and reg. rim are equal,,, right ?

My husband went to change out the battery on my '02 and found the dreaded exploding Firestone temp. Been reading this thread and we are totally baffled... So what's the solution, another temp spare, or a regular tire inflated to a lower pressure and mounted on the temp rim? If the latter is the solution, size please?

Catherine,
Depends on who you ask (whether to go with a compact or full spare) IMHO I have replaced the spare with a new Maxis two years ago, but when we go on trips I take it out so we can increase the trunk space. I keep a 12 volt air compressor in the trunk and a can of fixaflat. The worse case is I have it towed to a tire shop under the insurance that I have been paying for the last 25 years and used once. P.S. Car is 3 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile with spare out-------------------------------------------------------NAH JUST KIDDING

When I have time I may revisit the 205/55r17 tire on the original spare rim.Originally posted by HKS View Post

I read that the 205 spec say 5.5inch rim or somewhat wider.2002 TB Motor Trend COTY Blue/White/Full #24737 (One of 291)

This is what i went with. The tire went on the 5 inch rim without difficulty. I don't anticipate driving fast or long with the tire on the road (actually I don't anticipate the tire ever being on the road), so I'm really not worried about that half inch smaller wheel. I did need to sand a little off of the nubs on the back of the cover to get it to lie flat in the trunk, otherwise the fit was fine.Originally posted by HKS View Post

I'm happy with the result at this point and happy to have the $100 difference in price still in my wallet. I also like the idea of having a real tire in the trunk instead of an overpriced donut that needs 60 psi to operate.
