  • Touch-Up Paint For Medium Steel Blue

Looking for success stories and recommended product names for touching up some rock chips on the front end of my medium steel blue. The touch up paint in the Ford bottle seems a little too thick. I have investigated the Dr. Paint Chip web site and some members have used this product but only on the darker colors.

I'm looking for help on using products on the lighter colors.

    Mike,
I took Roger's (Vintage Merlot) advice and thinned the Ford MSB Touch-up paint with lacquer thinner. Clean the area to be touched up first with alcohol, then use a very small artist brush - the smaller the better, the one that comes in the bottle is too large, and apply several layers of paint letting each layer dry before the next is applied. The results are not perfect but the thinning and small brush help.

    Good luck,
    Cliff

Lee, Could you go into more detail on how well it covered and how it was to apply. What kit did you buy, was it enough, will what's left last for future use? Leroy

          Mike,
I have used various touch-ups in T-Bird colors from Automotive Touch-Up. I find their colors a near perfect match. I happen to have a touch-up bottle in MSB (code SP). I purchased it for a diecast conversion I did for one of our members. I have no need for it, so if you PM me with your address, it's yours.

If you look at the videos on Dr Colorchips web site it shows exactly how it works. I have gotten kits for our Tbird (merlot)and Mustang(Performance White) and both have been perfect matches.

You but on line. Kits come in several sizes. Leftover product depends on which size kit you buy.

                  Mike,

As I stated above, the Ford Touch-up paint works but is not perfect. I'm thinking of trying the Dr Colorchips kit. Did you try it? If so, would like to hear your results.

                  Thanks,
                  Cliff

Like Dino says, it is exactly as advertised. I've used it on three different cars and it covers road rash and small scratches perfectly. You can't go wrong with it.

I used the Dr.Chip product on my Thunderbird Blue '02 with less than satisfactory results. The color match was perfect, but the paint was so thin that it does not cover the black or grey background of a chip or scratch. Doesn't seem to build up even with multiple coats - each new coat wiped away the previous application.

Jeff, I think maybe you rubbed it too hard. The thick coat wipes off but it comes off as a result of the added solution, not the pressure applied. I had the same problem the first time I used the stuff. After I figured it out it worked fine....just takes more time to apply than the directions imply. Also, it doesn't hurt to let is stand for a while before you begin wiping it.

I have used the Dr.Colorchip with great success. At this point, I would not even consider anything else.

Cliff, I have not tried it yet. I'm waiting for much more pleasant & reliable weather. But from reading all the posts it seems that Dr. Color Chip is receiving many favorable votes.
