  • PARADE CAR

We have been asked to drive our car in the Spring Safari Parade in North Myrtle Beach in April. Has anyone done this before? Is there a way to have one or two people situp behind the driver and passenger seats (to wave at the crowd and throw beads)? Your thoughts.

Joe, the toneau cover is not strong enough to hold any weight. Here's what I did and have carried two teenage girls several times with no problems. I cut a piece of 3/8" plywood to fit on the rear panel just in front of the third brake light and on the portion where the toneau cover snaps. I then covered the plywood with a beach towel. With toneau cover in place, put the plywood on top of the toneau cover making sure it rest on the rear panel. The riders sit on the plywood and rest their feet on the shelf behind the seat.

            Re: PARADE CAR

We padded the void under the Boot with a padded comforter or blanket then instructed the riders to keep the bulk of their weight on the seat back. The comforter distributed weight and provided extra support but didn't put a lot of weight on the folded top or rear window.

We also clipped dog leashes to the child seat restraints of the passenger seat. This gave the riders something to hold onto in order to prevent the feeling of falling backwards. It worked very well.

I put pillows under the boot.
              I've had no problems.

I've used my '75 Pontiac in a few parades for my classic car club and I also built a bench for a person to sit on. I used 3/4 plywood, covered it with foam and wrapped it in white vinyl to match the interior upholstery. I did not want the rider to sit anywhere near the convertible top mechanism or well. It worked out very well for several parades and events.

I once had a politican who wanted to ride on the back of my 64 Galaxie in a town July 4th parade.

When I told him no, but he was welcome to sit in the back, he balked.

I told him to take a hike, literally.

Besides, I'd rather people look at my car than my passenger.
