Longtime park ranger dies in Kitsap County head-on collision

The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office arrested the 35-year-old driver of a Ford Thunderbird for investigation of vehicular homicide after his car collided with a car driven by a state park ranger.

Kitsap County sheriff's investigators say the driver of a car that fatally injured an off-duty state park ranger in a head-on collision Friday night may have been impaired.

Ranger Ed Johanson, 44, died at the scene, in the 12000 block of Northwest Holly Road in central Kitsap County. The collision occurred at about 8 p.m.

Johanson was a ranger for about 20 years, according to the state parks commission, serving at Kitsap Memorial State Park near Seabeck until a recent assignment to Kanaskat-Palmer State Park in the Green River Gorge area.He was driving home at the time of the collision.

The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office arrested the 35-year-old driver of a Ford Thunderbird for investigation of vehicular homicide after he was released from the hospital. A female passenger in the Thunderbird suffered minor injuries.

The Sheriff's Office said it appears the Thunderbird was traveling east on Holly Road, when it collided with the ranger's Honda Prelude, which was headed west

At least it was not a 2002-2005 Thunderbird that he was driving but an older model according to other reports from the state.

While this is a sad, tragic and preventable event, I'm not sure what benefit there was to this story by telling us he was driving a TBird, even if it was an older one.

It's news, & includes a TBird (no matter what year) as simple as that.

I understand that, Noah, and please don't interpret this as being criticism of your post. It's not. It's simply an observation of the media and how they sometimes choose to identify the make/model of a car, while other times ignoring it. Does that fact add to the story...I'm not sure. Would the story have been better/different if it was simply a late-model Ford? Does that information spin the story? Who knows...but just my observation.

The purpose for much of todays media is to create strong ratings. Their method of choice is shock & awe. There seems to be more creation than reporting of events.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.....................

Mark, I think you're right on the money...IMO, the media have become more of the problem than an aid...they should be telling the story, not become the story.

What year was the Honda Prelude? They did not have air bags until around 1992.

Interesting that this piece of tidbit news used as a filler in a lot of syndicated newspapers made the news all the way across the nation. Usually news in this really small county of Kitsap, Wa (pop. aprox 253,000) never makes the press outside of the county. BUT only a few months ago a Park Ranger was fatally shot here in Washington State so I guess this fatal & sad piece of news and in most newspapers is everyday stuff, was used in an effort to sell more news.

Another observation of the media is if the individuals have any military past that is mentioned up front. A tragic case in point; a 90 year old kills his ailing wife of 65 years, who he could no longer care for and could not stand to see her suffer anymore. Local paper headlines read "Former Marine Murders Wife". After reading the article he had served two years as a reserve during the Korean War. I assume the news media was able to trace the behavior back to something that happened 60 years ago...

What mods did the the Thunderbird have? Was there a trunk mat? Can someone start a poll of what mods you would like if you were going to crash your T-Bird into a mass of unsuspecting pedestrians?
