Re: Where did you go most often in your 1st car?

As high school Juniors in '61, in Lawton Oklahoma, three of us would combine funds to buy a +/- '50 Ford for $50. None of us being real wrenches, we'd drive it till it broke, sell it for $50, and repeat. Our driving would consist of carpooling to pick each other up for school, and after-school cruising on a loop between A&W and two other local drive-ins to consume vast quantities of Dr. Pepper and ultra thick garlic toast. A constant stream of HS guys and gals, mostly in separate cars, just like the movie. Except no girls in T-Birds, and very few impressive hot rods.

Those Fords were a hoot. We'd drive them with our left arms looped around the steering column to surreptitiously operate the three-on-the-tree, and make exaggerated motions with our right shoulders and arms as if we were working a floor shifter. Greatly amusing a fourth buddy who had his own '58 ford, which he had converted from column to floor shifter.

Boston Post Road from the Northeast Bronx to Port Chester. Bars, restaurants, diners,
clubs and girls. Those were the days.

I can remember leaning against the driver's door, side window down, and slightly grasping the vent window post. For some dumb reason, we thought that was a cool look.

          So did James Dean
And many of those $50. Fords had wore out door latches allowing a door to occasionally come open. I almost lost a girlfriend in my '49 when passenger door came open on a curve. That still gives me chill bumps.

Pittsburgh, late 60's--to the McDonalds in South park, then 1/4 mile up the road to Danny's Pizza and back again, several times over in case we missed anybody the first ten times we made the circuit.

Emporia KS in the 60's ... thru A&W and Dairy Queen to Bert's Drive In (carhops on skates)... out to the "Poorfarm Road" for drags or sneaking into the Drive In theater.

Although I grew up in a poor section of Miami, I could cruise my $150 '57 Ford Fairlane down Collins Ave in Miami Beach and look at all the rich people. Those two big bench seats were just perfect for a couple of 16yr old guys and their girl friends. Sometimes we would sneak through a famous hotel and swim in their pool until they noticed us and kicked us out, then we would just move on to the next hotel. Loved those days.

Since TBN is an honest group, I'd have to admit that my very first car a '30 A' never ran long enough to go anywhere

I restored an 1930 "A" model for my dad, running was never the problem, those brakes were just not dependable.

When I was in high school, Las Vegas was a much smaller town. Probably little more than 100,000 people. We used to cruise Fremont and Las Vegas Boulevard.

Now Fremont is open to pedestrians only.

Yea; and Ford had mechanical brakes up until '39 Ole Henry was a stubborn man about some changes. My first car was supposed to be a Model A but by the time I raised $75.00 it was gone. Would still like to have one. but know idea why.
One reason '36's were so popular is wheels same as '39 so you could have hydraulic brakes and look original. 36's were also a nitemare because there were so many changes all during the model year.
