  • Digital compass for existing mirror

I have seen others but for now I thought I would post this one. Just the compass portion is on the front of your existing mirror:

Get the clean look of a "factory" in-mirror compass.

Do you want a compass, but would like the look of original equipment compasses built-into the rear view mirror? This compass gives you that clean look, without the expense. The digital display adheres to the front of your mirror, while the processor and sensor mount unobtrusively behind the mirror. Installation takes seconds. Lights up at the touch of a button for nighttime driving.

    It can be viewed here:

I hope this helps those who may be interested

Has anyone tried this? I wonder if you get any additional radio noise from it?

      Thanks

Re: Digital compass for existing mirror

        hi all
i purchased this item at target for $29 and have installed it on my bird. it looks very nice and works well. only complaint i have is that the night light is like a watch(rather dim) and also the mirror housing is so thick that the wire between the display and the box on the back of the mirror just barely fits-also the back mirror housing is not flat but the box does stay put with velco included. i do recommend it as a cheap alternative to buying the mirror with compass built in.
on a side not i have tried the smaller airguide traditional type compass in several locations in the car and it would not work as there is a tremendous magnetic field inside the car by the dash and console (either the speaker magnets or perhaps the way ford wires everything hot caused it to read west all the time-when removed from the bird it worked fine)

Thanks a million for posting this for us George, it looks like it would do the job and, not interfere with the looks at all. I'll check my local Target like Jim did before placing my order. It will be great to have some kind of direction again when traveling.

One other option to keep in mind is many cars (not necessarily Thunderbirds) came equipped with a self-dimming features and a compass. Many of these mirrors end up in salvage yards or auctions and you can pick these up for nearly nothing. Check with your local salvage yard. The mirror would need the wedge type mount.

The self dimming feature to me is worth more than having the compass. However, I will take both when available.

Yes, I think the self dimming feature + compass is worth waiting for.....Are there are any other models that don't have the self dimming rear view mirror?

Re: Digital compass for existing mirror

I bought the same compass at Walmart for 29.90 + tax in July. I agree with MATBird & dartguy699.

Yes Ken, that is the item. I just ran across it the other day in that magazine and when the subject came up, in that other thread, I went through my recycle bin to get the info for posting.

I bought a self-dimming mirror with compass on E-Bay for $50.00. I posted a how-to insdtall it along with the homelink, both of which are gone. TTo me, the option shouild have been available from the start and I am very happy with it. It's worth the money and time to install the compass/mirror INHO.

Remember to bring it to my attention the next time I see you with your car. I'm really interested in how it looks.
