I used the Amtrak to travel from New Orleans to Chicago and it was a 24 hour train ride. I would not recommend as it was almost the same price as a flight that would've only taken about two hours. Just save the time and spend a little extra for a flight. It is so much more worth it

My Dad had been waxing nostalgic about the train ride he took from California to Norfolk, VA for his initial training cruise in the Navy. He couldn't afford to fly, so he took the train. No sleeping arrangements... just a seat. He'd loved the scenery of the trip. I told him, "Why don't you take a train here next time you visit?" He though that was a GREAT idea. Of course, a few years had passed between the ride he remembered and now. He's in his early 80s and she's mid 70s. They got a room with a couple of high tech seats, two fold-down beds, and a private bathroom. They described it as others have here... extreme economy of space. The trip took a couple of days (maybe 3, I don't recall). They both enjoyed at least some aspects of the trip... the scenery, meeting nice people in the lounge and dining car. BUT, when I picked them up at the station around 3:00 AM, they both looked so stiff that I though a strong breeze might knock them over! Neither one of them seemed to look forward to the prospect of the return trip. My Dad said it wasn't so bad. My Aunt said never again! (and if it wasn't for the fact that she was traveling with her brother, I'm pretty sure sh would've bagged the return trip and booked a flight home).
I enjoyed my Pullman Car train ride very much in 1962. It was on my way to navy boot-camp in San Diego.
We left Omaha by train and picked up some more recruits in Kansas City.
The trip took 2+ days to get there. We all had a blast getting there due to some of the crazy ones.
I am glad I did not go by plane and I used up two days of my four year enlistment having a great time.
Thanks for the useful train info from all.

P.S. I just remembered I said all this before, months or years ago.Last edited by HKS; Jan 16, 2020, 12:42 PM.2002 TB Motor Trend COTY Blue/White/Full #24737 (One of 291)
