  • How many without running lights?

    Greetings all!
Forgive the newbie question, but I am curious about this. I've had my '02 Bird since '03 (from dealer). The car has no running lights and just blank disk where the running light are. I have never seen another Thunderbird like this. How would I find out how many were made this way? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello from Knoxville, Steve! Not sure about the running lights - it seems like I heard somewhere that had something to do with whether the car was originally sold in Canada? But I may be thinking of something else. I know of a Steve Hull originally from Jefferson County who is an insurance agent, but your screen name indicates maybe you're not the same guy. Are you?

Yes, I was right about Canada. Check out this page from Dot's website:

The pictures of the lights vs. inserts is near the bottom.

The running lights wre a no cost option. Some dealers didn't realize this and did not order them. BTW, they were called Supplemental lights.

They were not available on Canadian cars and were optional here so the cars could pass the government safety crash tests. They would fail if the lights were installed.

Maybe you could do a CarFax on your VIN and it should tell you if your car was sold in Canada. Canada cars were sold without the lights. Leroy

They were also sold in the US this way if the dealer or buyer didn't ask for them to be added to the car. I have seen quite a few US cars back in 02 when the dealer didn't check this on the ordering form. My dealer, when I ordered mine back in Dec. 2000, didn't know this until I told them about it when I placed my order.

Steve, by the way. Your color isn't called Colorado Red , it's called Torch Red.

              Thanks Darsi,
No I'm not that Steve Hull. Distant cousin. The car was ordered from Rusty Wallace in Newport, sat there for close to a year befor I picked it up.

BTW, my screen name come from being the " emphatic no " guy in the IT dept. Every outlandish request that is cost or technology prohibative ends up in my hands. Some folks don't want to upset users by saying no to them, and some users won't take no for an answer. So I end up with them. My boss says I take a little TOO much pleasure in saying no, but that's his opinion <G>.

Re: How many without running lights?

Thank you all for the replies and information. I now know the light to be supplemental lights. I have heard them called many things, so to now know the correct term is very cool.

Spence, thanks for the info also. I have never seen another bird with the inserts instead of lights. (probably now I will since I posted this). I have a 2009 Mustang that is my everyday car, and it is Torch Red. I will have to check when I get home, but I could swear the touch up paint I got with the Bird, and the window sticker both say Colorado Red. I'll check when I get get home and let you know....

                    Steve,
Torch Red and Colorado Red are one and the same. Names were marketing tools so can change from model to model for the exact same color. Surprised that your window sticker says colorado red as the Thunderbird name for the color on other 2002 window stickers will have Torch Red.
Is yours an original window sticker? Did you buy yours new?

As for numbers without the SPLs (short term for supplemental parking light), only quickdraw can get the exact numbers.

Steve, I bought my 02 new in Georgia, it had no supplemental lights. A couple months after purchase I paid Team Ford $100 to install the lights. If I had known then what I know now, I probably could have convinced Ford to install them free for me.

                        Dot,
I'll check when I get home, but I'm pretty sure it says Colorado Red. The reason I think that is when I bought it, the thought ran through my mind "What the heck is red in Colorado that they would name a color after it?" . Weird, I know. Since I am new here how would I get the info from quickdraw? Just email? I am interested to know the production numbers without the SPLs.

I bought my 02 brand new without the lights. I did not like the look and asked the dealer about installing them. We agreed on a 50/50 split. I think I paid 60 bucks. Worth every penny.

Believe it or not, but the dirt has a red look to it in Colorado (especially when wet).
