  • Destination and Delivery charges?

Does TBN have a dealer, or other person knowledgeable about the delivery charges that appear on the window stickers, to answer this?

I've always believed that the delivery costs to various parts of the country are averaged so everyone pays the same. That is, a car delivered to a dealer across the street from the factory was charged the same as a car delivered to Chicago or even Florida. How is this charged? Same amount to the entire country? By regions? Or by the type of transportation used - rail or over the road? And I would expect this may vary by year. Anyone?

Bill - you see lots of window stickers - what is your assessment?

Harry. I have two Ontario destination window stickers/dealer retail sheets and both show delivery charge as $ 990.00. One is for COB and one for Dixie Ford Sales.

Two other window stickers and both for U.S. Cars. One shows a Delivery charge of $555.00 usd (3Y103465) and one delivery charge of $605.00 usd (3Y106155) . Both these u.s cars may be 007's.

This would indicate that u.s delivery charge is/was different.

    Martin.

      Harry,

The '02 stickers I've seen have a delivery charge of $555 for shipping by both rail and convoy to three or four different parts of the country.

I have two '03 stickers and have seen a few others. All have delivery charge of $605 for shipping by both rail and convoy to NY, PA, KS, MA, & CA, as I recall.

I've only seen a couple of '04 stickers, both with delivery charge of $605.

I was under the impression that it was averaged out, everyone gets charged the same destination charges. That amount might vary year to year depending on the costs.

That is the way it was when I left Ford in 1999. When I started in 1968 cost was based on Detroit. This upset people in Atlanta, buying a car built in Atlanta and paying freight from Detroit.

I did see many window stickers working on the window sticker project. 90% came from Dot Lang (thanks to all who sent one- still looking for Deluxe models and Canadian and Mexican).

I was confused by multiple shipping charges . Came to the conclusion that there was no difference due to method of shipping or distance shipped. Believed that there was a review/possible change with the new MY but looked to me to be a shipping charge change with a mid-MY price change. Really believed that costs were averaged for continental USA.

Am currently out of town and will look at what's in my files but believe any
I have will not be conclusive. Really look forward to Dot's input.

                Ron,
Bought my first GM Car under the employee Class A/GMS program in 1971. A 71 Vega (was the Vega or Pinto the worst car?) which was built 5 miles from my house. My 23 year old brain couldn't understand why I paid the same as one shipped 2500 hundred miles.

Same here, my first new Ford was a 1969 Ford Country Squire, built at the Hapeville Assembly Plant, and I picked it up at Harry White Ford just five blocks away. Same freight as from Detroit.

Uniform destination and delivery charges apparently do not apply in Canada. Snowbird documented two cars, shipped a month apart, that were $4,400 extra for the one nearly 1,000 miles CLOSER.

Bill, I believe differences in shipping charges may be related to msrp price changes. Costs were going up (and still are) for everything in that time period. You have the readable window stickers and they are the best indication of price changes thru the year. With each year, you can check by the vin #. Most likely you'll find the earlier vins for a year have a lower shipping charge than later vins.
